Minidragon continues:

Spiffy swords

For the sword, I again used just three paints:

  1. IWM White
  2. my base gray mix
  3. and my black wash

I had slopped some paint onto the blade of the sword while painting the hilt, so the first step was to clean that up. Next, I gave the whole blade a (thinned – 2 parts wash to 1 part water) black wash.

Working on the sword
  • In block 3, you can see that I've selectively darkened the top right (as you look at it) portion of the blade.
  • In block 4, you can see that I've extended the dark area along the length of the right half of the blade - at this point, I also began darkening the left 'tip' section of the blade.
  • In block 5, I've added some white to my gray mix, and lightened the top left and lower right portions of the blade... this gives the blade a "stretched checkerboard" look.
  • Finally, in block 6, I've added more white to my grey mix, and done the final highlights at the top-left and bottom-right part of the sword. I also painted a very thin white line down the length of the blade.
