It was a Wednesday evening. Both generals chose the same army they played the trial game - MiniBart chose the royal Empire, and MiniHans went for the Goblins (probably because he is a greenie when it comes to wargames).
The Empire took residence in C8, and the Goblins built their huts in N2. Let's say that the Empire site is on the southern part of the map. The Empire units are represented by red counters, and the Goblins have - how convenient - green counters.
MiniBart started the first turn. He recruited the Mob in his capitol. MiniHans opted for speed (as he did in our first game). He started off with Clangett's Furies (use Sean Connery-ish accent here, please). MiniBart sent his Mob forward on the eastern part of the map, and MiniHans chose the western side.
Both generals founded a new village in their next turn, and raised a new unit in their capitol. These units were sent east and west to engage the units that were sent forward in the previous turn.
MiniBart entered the mountains in turn 3, and moved further north and west. MiniHans also went to the mountains and further south. And that's where he mixed up the shooting and moving steps of a phase. A serious price would be paid for it: the Clangett's Furies would be shot by MiniBart's Rangers. The picture shows a nasty grinning Empire general, just before the shooting phase starts.
(Comment by MiniHans: Yuck! Pictures like this should be forbidden.)
In the next few turns, MiniHans succeeded in gaining a strong position in the south-west and in the mountains, while MiniBart built up a strong line of defense in the east. This lasted several turns and nothing spectacular happened. MiniBart later stated that he did this because of his expensive units: he didn't want to start a battle before having a secure defense against the fast Goblin units.
The game lasted longer than we expected. We had to read a lot of the rules again. What else can you expect when you play a game for the second time? So, after 2 hours, we decided to quit the game and call it a draw. Though the battle wasn't that spectacular, we both had a feeling that we now had a better grasp of the rules, which our next battle definitely would benefit from.
