First, I glued the riders to their mounts, and spray-painted everything black. Then I glued the primed models to plastic bases, for ease of handling while painting.

The Wolf Riders are primed black

I used 3 types of brushes for this project:

#1 round brush
I bought it in a hardware store, and I use for most of my painting.
#1 liner brush
With a good point. I use it for belts and the like.
10/0 brush
I use this one for really small details, like eyes.

The last 2 brushes I bought in a hobby store. I have 2 sets of these brushes: one set for regular paints, and second set for metallics.

Using my round sable brush, I painted all of the wolves dark gray.

Preparing the brush for highlights

To highlight, I shape my round brush to a flat point with my fingers, dip it in paint, and carefully wipe some of the paint off on a paper towel. I highlight the wolves with medium gray.

Next, I highlight some wolves with light gray, some with white, and some with yellow brown. This will bring some variety to my unit.

Wolves with a variety of final highlights

I painted the wolves' noses black, tongues dark red, eyes orange, and teeth off-white. I used the 10/0 brush for that.
