The figure was first painted all over with Regal Blue. I then matt-varnished the figure to protect the blue base colour, and once that was dry, began successive applications of Regal Blue mixed with increasing amounts of white, each time using a lighter drybrushing. Eventually the figure was a lovely pale blue, 'cuddly toy' colour. I then washed the entire model with a heavy coat of black ink diluted with a little flow improver (floor wash). The black ink stained the lighter Regal Blue/white to a grey colour, but could not stain the Regal Blue basecoat due to the varnish coat. Thus it took on a deep blue-black colour, which has more life than black alone. (I chose to use blue, but Purple could also be used to pre-tint the black.)
The machine parts, studs, and fists were basecoated with Humbrol Matt Antique Bronze, then highlighted with a 50/50 mix of this and Shining Gold. When dry, they were washed over with an almost neat coat of Flesh Wash. Mouth picked out in red, and eyes and teeth in white. An overall coat of matt varnish, followed by an application of satin varnish to the metal parts to leave them shiny.
