The game has potential, and - with the addition of ships and other troop types - it can have an added tactical element that can easily add to the depth of the game, without turning it into a rules nightmare spread over hundreds of pages and various booklets.
The record keeping is very limited and simple to carry out, so you don't need to devote too much of the game time to mark squares off or figure out modified stats. Chips and cards do the trick - you just need to keep on playing the game and focused on your strategy. With the extra maps — available for free — I can pretty much picture what a game with three or six players would be, and I'm pretty sure it would run smoothly, thanks to the concise rules.
I liked the game, even if I did not go crazy about it. The size of the miniatures is ideal for the game's format (hexagonal board game) and even though the Capitals are not overwhelmingly beautiful or elaborated, the rest of the Empire line is certainly and without doubt one of the best lines to be found in the 15mm scale — the same as Demonworld, with minor modifications to certain models so they could fit in a single base.
All in all, I would recommend this game to those players who want something not-too-detailed, not-too-complicated, and dynamic enough to keep players interested. With minor modifications and house rules, you could easily turn it into the exact kind of game you want to have, and the kind you keep playing with friends and family on a Sunday afternoon, every now and then or as often as you can.
Cheers!
