First, I want to apologize for my english, which is not very good. However, I hope that this article will be understandable. I've taken technical words from a dictionary, but I'm not always sure they're the right ones...
This figure was painted for a contest organized by Bill from The Miniatures Page. Many thanx to Bill Armintrout for that.
All paints are from the Vallejo Model Color range, and sometimes Citadel.
The pictures are not the best (I still have problems with lighting).
I cleaned-up the figure with a cutter and a file, and I hunted for any mold problems (as I usually miss plenty of them). I removed the slot-bar, and inserted a pin under the foot. The pin's diameter is 1mm - which is too big in this case, but I broke my 0.5mm drill.
The staff, composed of two pieces, was not easy to assemble, and I had to cut off a lot of metal. A 0.8mm hole was drilled in the two parts, and a pin glued within to strengthen the assembly.
After that, Milliput was used to fix a few imperfections. Then I sanded the entire figure with sandpaper (grits 600 and 1000). I finished by polishing the figure with a drilling machine and a brass brush (be careful, it can mar the surface) and a nylon one.
After that, I washed it with warm water and soap, using a tooth-brush.
I basecoated the figure using Citadel White paint.
The basecoat is Matt Flesh (955). I heavily diluted the paint - four coats were necessary to get an opaque surface. Using heavily diluted paint allows you to produce a smooth surface.
A first shading is done by adding Orange Brown (981) to the base color (50/50). It's applied in the hollow of the muscles, the eye sockets, and under the nose. In short, all the shadowed areas (using zenithal ligthing - i.e., the light comes from the top of the figure). A second shading is next applied, adding more Orange Brown to the base (80/20). It's applied on the joining surfaces, eyes sockets, and between the fingers.
The lips are painted with Matt Flesh (955) and Vermillion (909). A touch of white is applied to give a shiny effect. The eyes are painted in White (951), and the pupil is Andrea Blue (841).
Higlighting is done by adding white to the base color. I applied four layers, each layer lighter than the previous, not overlapping it completely, always with very diluted paint.
