Concept

The raw figure

As I mentioned in my last writeup, concept is very important when you are painting a mini. Sometimes you can just let fly with the paints, but I much prefer to actually visualise what I want the mini to look like first, and then make it match my vision.

With this guy, I nearly spent as much time working out what to do with him as actually painting him. Going by the writeup supplied by Bill, he is basically a kind of mystical ninja guy, striking from the shadows, etc. I did a search of CMON to see how others had painted him. I only found a few, and they were all dark ninja types (except for the Jango Fett coloured one).

I figured everyone would end up painting him dark, so I had to try something different. This is where it occurred to me to try something I hadn't done before. On the last mini, I did my first big chunk of Sky Earth Non Metallic Metallics - this time, I would try lighting effects.

After last Games Day in Sydney, I had had a good chance to look at (from all angles) a couple of Victoria Lambs' firey entries and ask her how she had done it. She actually made it sound pretty simple, so I figured - hey, let's try this out. I also figured I'd write about something that very few people do, and would be most informative to the readers =D

Painting

So on to the painting. I was going to paint him up in a very Hilderbrant Brothers type of colour range, with strong blues to contrast with the bright oranges on the other, so one look at my palette will give you an idea of what I was using.
