How do I plan to paint these miniatures?

There is an intended scheme wich we must paint, but there are some ways to give them an individual touch.

  • First I will do bases for the miniatures. I think they are difficult to handle in a game, with round bases.
  • Second is the shield. I've decided not to remove the shield engraving, as I really like it.
  • Third is the colour of the clothes. I will outline the purple clothes with a light grey wich gives a nice contrast.

OK, all preparations are finished...

Let's start painting the apes!

First, I applied the basic colours to the models:

Fur:
Black
Clothes:
Mix of Purple and Black
Leather:
Mix of Bestial Brown and Black
Silver:
Boltgun Metal
Bronze:
Tin Bitz

The purple I used for the Legionaires is a Vallejo Purple (as the shop was out of Citadel Purple).

Legionaire in the basic colours

I painted all 6 models at once. You could split up the models in groups of 3, but I prefer larger groups to finish all models of a unit at once. (For 8 models, I would split them up in 2 groups of 4.)

Six Legionaires in the basic colours

Now I started to highlight one colour after the other, beginning with the fur.

I wanted the fur to be dark, so I only used 2 layers, with a very dark grey and and a dark grey drybrushed onto the fur.

Next are the clothes. I used a mix of Purple and a drop of Black as the basic colour. The clothes are highlighted by adding white to the basic colour.

I did 4 layers of highlights for the purple. After this is finished, I used a grey for the borders of the clothes, highlighted by adding white to the grey.

Same for the details of the shield. I did the shields in groups of 3, as it is much work; you will need lots of bananas to get the energy to paint these shields...

Shields with white dots

First, I wanted to paint the dots (18 dots...) around the shields in white, too. But this looked boring, so I decided - after painting these white! - to overpaint them with red. I used a dark red as basic colour, highlighted with red, orange and yellow. I only highlighted the upper dots, leaving out the lower ones. I applied a layer of gloss varnish to these to get a gem-like effect.

The Leather parts are highlighted with Bestial Brown and Snakebite Leather mixes.

Now the skin. I didn't want a black skin, but a dark brown one, highlighted by adding white. You will get a dirty grey tone which I really like (hope you can see it in the pictures, as it is very close to black). I used a mix of Scorched Brown and Black, highlighted by adding white.

Final skin colour

The teeth are painted with Scorched Brown, highlighted with Snakebite Leather, Bleached Bone and White.

Now the metal parts. The Boltgun Metal is washed with Brown Ink. After dried, it is highlighted with Mithril Silver. The bronze parts are highlighted with Dwarf Bronze and washed with Brown Ink. I added a final highlight by mixing Dwarf Flesh and Boltgun Metal.

I wanted red glowing eyes (Angry Apes of Hell...), so I used a dark red, highlighted with red and a dot of yellow.

Done!

I used mostly the brush Number 2 on the Simian models, and the 000 for the teeth and eyes.

Tomorrow: Basing the finished models!
