Toby Thornton of Artmaster Studio writes:
Once the ballast is dry, take your chisel-ended brush and apply a small amount of cream paint to the end. Brush it lightly on the edge of your palette, in order to remove most of the paint so that a thin, dry amount remains on the end of the brush. Then brush it gently over the top of the base, catching the highest points of the ballast.
This creates the illusion of depth and a varied earth.
