Dread Pirate Garness continues:
I painted the "eye slit" black, and then dotted it with yellow and washed to color with red and orange to give 2 glowing eyes.
The shoulder pads were done in the style of the rising sun from the Japanese battle flag. I elected to do a blue-on-blue scheme, with the ceremonial sun and rays prominent. I began by using Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue. I thinned the paint in the same ratio as the green.
The picture above shows how it looks after the first coat or two, and the picture below shows how it looks after 9 or 10 coats.
For the sun and rays, I used Americana True Blue - gradually building up the color, and being careful to keep the lines straight. I began by painting a thin line. Due to the thin paint this did not show up well, but it was enough to see if the line was straight or not. Once I was satisfied, I made the line thin near the sun and gradually widened it as I went out and away.
Once the paint had dried thoroughly, I highlighted the ends with pure white, thinned 1:6 paint-to-water. It took several coats, but the transition was nice and seemed to have a bit of an electric feel to it. I will admit I was rather happy with the way this turned out.
