Rob Jedi continues:
Now it was time for the engines. These started out Palmer Hudson Red (a very flat, saturation-wise red). I then went over this with Scarlet, then highlighted that with Brilliant Red and Bonfire Orange. However, this looked all wrong. It ended up being the brightest part of the whole miniature, and didn't match the red I had already used. See - this happens to everyone, sometimes things just look wrong.
So I went over the engines with Hudson Red again, then started all over again. I went over it a bit with Scarlet again, then mixed white ink with Scarlet and put on some highlighting around the panel lines and on the front. Then blended it back down with Scarlet and Hudson Red.
Then it was time to dirty it up a bit with some black on the intakes and the front dome, and to dirty up the vents on the sides. For these I put some thinned paint at the back of the vent, and smeared it backwards with my finger. I then painted the exhaust with Boltgun Metal, as well as the dome on the front. I then painted the inside of the exhaust with Bonfire Orange, then while it was still wet, stabbed it with Bad Moon Yellow - this gave a nice, random mix of the colours to give a very hot look.
Now for the rocket pods. I painted the rocket area at the front black, then painted the tip of every rocket with Ash Grey. I then added a red stripe around the front section. I also added exhaust burns along the side (coming from the side vents), again using my finger to smear it backwards. I then painted a Viridian logo on the front of the wing by painting an Enchanted Blue circle, highlighting it, and then using thinned-down white to do the V and the cross bars. OK - all done, I glued it in place.
The seat was done with a mix of several browns - Burnt Sienna and Vermont Clay. The little console in front of the seat was painted black, then thin bright-green lines were painted on (like the motion tracker from Aliens). I added some blips with red, then dotted 'em with white ink.
Last parts to go were to detail the rotor on the bottom, and the skirt of the hovercraft. I painted the fan Boltgun Metal, then gave it an Armour Wash wash. I then painted the frame over the fan with Christmas Green, and highlighted the edges of it with Summer and Parrot Greens.
The skirt was a bit fiddly, since I'd rubbed off most of the primer around the edge with all the handling of the model I'd been doing. I repainted the area black, then gave the seperate sections Charcoal Grey and then a slightly lighter mix of dark grey, then highlighted the edges with Medium Grey before blending that back in.
OK - I think that's the entire vehicle done.
