I find that I get great coverage with craft paints. Here is a list of the colors I used:

Craft paints

Americana

Honey Brown (DA163)
French Grey Blue (DA98)
Light Cinnamon (DA114)

Apple Barrel

Territorial Beige (20558)
Pewter Grey (20580)
Scotch Blue (20545)
Wedgewood Green (20530)
Sage Green (20568)
English Ivy Green (20756)
Antique White (20505)
Black (20504)

First step was to paint the spears. I used Honey Brown for the fresh-cut look.

Next was Territorial Beige for the tanned-flesh look. Given the primitive look of these figures, I opted for a dirty/tanned tone. I thinned the paint a little, to help with coverage and provide variations in the final look. The method is not quite as thin as stain painting, but has a similar effect.

Flesh painted

Next was the Pewter Grey for the spear tips (as they had a stone look).
