My first impressions upon recieving the Hobby Products Empires game were good. The box is attractive, with nice artwork and lots of color. The inside is just as nice. There are lots of little colored bits: some interesting-looking cards, some interesting-looking bank boards, and, ahhhh, the sweet smell of unpunched token cards. The booklet and game pieces are nicely made and seem to be good quality.
I took a few minutes and looked over all the items to see what I had. Two metal miniature cities in a blister come with the game - this is what gives the box its heft. The rules booklet is a little thin, and I think that's good. I like the painting section in the back. Not much text but nice clear photos and a good variety of units pictured. As I'm supposed to paint these miniature pieces, that will come in very handy later on.
My game group meets once a week for a regular game, but when one or more persons can't make it, the rest of us still get together and play something else for the night. It wasn't long after I received the Empires box that such an opportunity presented itself. My friend Jon agreed to try the game, and we agreed to meet later that week.
I decided to start painting...
