Having experimented with two of the flocking gels, I decided to next mess around with the "largest grit" version - Coarse Flocking Gel.
My first impression on opening the jar was that I'd never need flocking gel this blocky... but I decided to give it a try and see how it looked.
My "volunteers" for this session are some Orcs of the Triple Death, a line of pre-painted figures from Skirmisher. These figures, sculpted by Sandra Garrity, come in seven different sets - here I have a doxen mixed Orcs. I'm going to use them as reinforcements for dungeongaming.
These figures are pretty neatly painted, so it doesn't take long for me to do the necessary touch-ups. The cast-on bases seem a bit narrow to me, so I epoxy the figures down to steel disks.
I wait a day to make sure the epoxy is cured, then slather on the flocking gel.
Another day's wait for the flocking gel to dry, then I give it my usual "dungeon basing" paint job - a black basecoat with an ink wash and grey highlights.
Looks like a class graduation picture, doesn't it? Here's a better look at the bases:
Now that I see the effect on a finished model, this flocking gel doesn't seem out of place - it's a nice, rubbled look. The only thing I wonder is if I overdid the basecoat, or maybe didn't stir the gel enough - some of the "rubble" seems too "coated." But that's a minor quibble.
