At this stage of construction the general profile was looking very good, but I was disappointed with the texture of the foam, a texture that was very apparent and (if left) could have detracted from the finished model/models. I therefore decided to 'clad' the model with plastic card, 'sticky-back plastic' (from old advertising labels) and paper. Further detail was added with thin slivers of plastic rod and scrap plastic and foam.
I find that this is my favourite part of construction, and allows me a certain artistic freedom to individualize the models and give them character. In this scale, the detailing is quite generalized and arbitrary.
The tail structure is plastic card welded with liquid poly glue. The mast is a section of cocktail stick, sanded smooth and with a slight taper. Additional detail is as above.
Final Construction
Prior to painting, I added a small section to each of the rear engine sections to act as a prop, and a small section of tapered plastic rod to the front as a cannon or main armament - all stuck with superglue and, in most cases, coated with liquid poly glue.
The construction of all three models was completed in less than a week of short stints in the shed. Each model is constructed from approximately 90 separate pieces, and the models are 95mm long, 30mm wide, and 42mm tall.
