There's nothing like seeing a long-running project coming to completion!
As I mentioned a while ago, I've returned to my fantasy roots to complete my oldest painted army – which I'm calling my Volcano Dwarves, using the 15mm figures once available from Grenadier.
Today, we'll look at some command bases for the army.
These figures were sent to our friends in Sri Lanka, Fernando Enterprises, came back painted, and then waited patiently for me to base them on Mighty Armies 1" x 2" bases. I contoured, painted, and flocked the bases, added LITKO FlexSteel on the bottom (for magnetic storage), and sealcoated everything with flat matte.
My instructions for painting the Dwarves were:
Caucasian/tanned flesh tone. Beards: black, brown, gray, blonde (varied). Army colors are red and yellow (volcano); these are Chaos Dwarves.
For the general standing on a shield, I told the painters:
Bottom figures: leather armor, gray clothes, bare arms, steel sword handle in leather scabbard. Top figure: standing on yellow shield. Shiny steel armor, steel boots, shiny chainmail, shiny sword, golden helmet.
For the flagbearers, my instructions were:
Red hats, yellow shirts, shiny chainmail, black pole with silver top, brown paints, black boots. Flags/banners: flames or volcano.
And for the drummers, I said:
Clothing in grays and browns. Leather armor brown with brass studs. Helmet steel; hood gray. Boots black. Drumsticks black with red tips. Drums brass with yellow tops and bottoms. Axe shaft light wood; axe metallic and sharp edges.
As an update to my previous article, Mirliton currently has these figures in its online catalog, so they are available again!
I've tried to arrange the figures on each base differently, to provide some variety.
I also have an 'extra' flagbearer pose that's not shown in the current catalog…
These three command stands will allow me to divide the army into sections, or I can add them to provide unit commands as needed.
