In preparing for a future 28mm fantasy project, I realized that I had a shortage of what you might call, well… monsters!
Fortunately, RPE (Ral Partha Europe) has no shortage of fantastic monsters.
This model is the Tatzelwurm, from the Dark Eye RPG range.
In Alpine folklore, the Tatzelwurm or Stollenwurm, Stollwurm is a lizard-like creature, often described as having the face of a cat, with a serpent-like body which may be slender or stubby, with four short legs or two forelegs.
This model was painted by our friends in Ukraine, Old Guard Painters. I kept my directions simple this time:
Assemble body, head and tail. Gray with bright eyes.
I then based the painted model on a LITKO wooden base (painted and flocked by myself), with FlexSteel underneath for storage purposes (also available from LITKO in matching sizes).
The catalog picture shows the model on a round base. I chose to go rectangular, as it is often convenient to designate front, side and rear (depending on your ruleset). However, the pose of the monster makes 'front' seem more like the corner!
The physicality of miniatures forces you to think about where you're going to use the monster. I decided he wasn't dungeoncrawl material, because he's just so big, he'd be stuck to a large room or extra-large corridors. So I based him as an 'outdoors' monster.
