I've been hankering to get started with a campaign in Mighty Armies - the 15mm fantasy ruleset originally published by Mongoose Publishing, and now in the hands of Rebel Minis. The boxed sets provide a good basic army, but I decided to go with two boxes to get more flexibility for my Border Dwarves.

BlackMountainMinis Fezian of Black Mountain Miniatures, based out in Nevada, was kind enough to take on the painting assignment. I left the painting scheme entirely to his discretion.

The King

Kings

The only downside of buying two boxed sets is that you end up with two Kings... but that's always good for a civil war scenario, right?

King

The four figures in this set comprise the King (with double-bladed axe), the standardbearer, and two warriors.

The Warriors

Warriors

Here are eight stands of warriors, which have usefully been painted with two different shield colors - that gives me the option of fielding these troops as separate armies or clans.

Warriors

There are four warrior variants - two with swords, one with an axe, and one with a warhammer.

Rangers

Rangers

In Mighty Armies, Dwarven Rangers differ from ordinary crossbow-armed troops in having the Scouting special ability. This allows them to deploy in ambush positions prior to battle, and they get a special saving roll against shooting attacks ("taking advantage of cover").

Rangers

Visually, the Rangers are distinct due to their heavy armor (different from crossbowmen) and lack of shields (different from warriors).

Rangers

The Rangers carry a large quiver of arrows slung on their back. They also have a hatchet hanging from their waist belt.

Crossbowmen

Crossbowmen

Crossbowmen are almost as numerous as warriors in the basic Dwarven army.

Crossbowmen

They also carry an axe, which helps explain why their fighting score is the same as the warriors.
