I've slowly been assembling a Grey Knights force, and this is the first Troop selection – a basic Strike Squad of Grey Knights.

My concept (this is space fantasy, right?) is that the members of this squad have inherited the geneseed of the Knights of the Round Table.

These figures – a boxed set makes five figures – were annoying to assemble. Not just because of having a lot of parts, but because getting the arms, hands and swords properly posed was fiddly. I added metal disks to the base to give the figures some heft, and for storage in boxes lined with magnetic sheet.

My paint scheme was simple, with the idea that Grey Knights should be grey, right? grin The squad's tactical color is red. I decided to follow the codex and make the Nemesis force swords 'tempered iron, flecked with shards of silver' rather than making them 'glow'. I didn't bother with 'writing' on the purity seals.

The intimidating part, for me, was that the shoulderpads had an area where I was obviously supposed to inscribe something – the figure's name or motto. That was outside my comfort zone.

My first thought was to design some decals with the names, print out the decals on my laser printer, and apply the decals to the models. I purchased some decal paper that the manufacturer said was intended for use with laser printers… and the paper burned and ruined my laser printer. frown

Discouraged, I put the project on the shelf for a while.

Eventually, I began practicing with some fine-point Zig markers, to see if I could gain some proficiency in writing with an archaic look. At last, I took the gamble and inked the names on the shoulderpads by hand!
