WAB – as it has the options for special rules for each army, giving each their own special way of play. |

African Pigmy is less spicy than an Indian Pigmy and you def get humgry again after a Chinese Pigmy
Does that help? Rgds Mads |

Hoplon. Seriously, the advantages are obvious. - No long rules arguments - No On-Line Bashing - No problems at Tournaments - No 'Will Hoplon kill FoG?' threads - Any scale, range or make of figures can be used – turn up with whatever you have and the chances of a game are the same There are so many benefits to a game played by only one person per continent. I am amazed it doesn't win an award. Pat |

Hack, written by a historical wargamer for historical wargamers. Who needs fluff books when we have Xenophon and Thucidides? |
Griefbringer | 15 Mar 2008 5:37 a.m. PST |
Sane Max has put forth some very convincing arguments. Indeed, I would propose re-naming Ancient Discussion Board on TMP as Hoplon Discussion Board (especially since it seems that any thread here – including those describing the love life of ancient Greeks – can deservedly turn into a "Hoplon does it more accurately through mechanisms X, Y and Z"). All joking aside, has anyone ever tried Hoplon? |
McKinstry | 15 Mar 2008 7:23 a.m. PST |
When I was younger I used to enjoy watching Hoplon Cassidy on the Saturday Matinee. I seem to remember him always using a six-shooter but there may have been pikes. |
Lowtardog | 15 Mar 2008 7:34 a.m. PST |
When I was in my teens I used to get a Hoplon in the morning, apparently it was my hormones ;0) |

are we there yet? |

All joking aside, has anyone ever tried Hoplon?
This game seems to be the dark horse hiding in the shadows. Anyone who has tried it has liked it
me thinks. Unfortunatly, amazon seems to not want to market it with abandon like some of the other games. I have not tried it and probably won't because
wait for it
I bought FoG and like that! That and the price is a bit hefty. |

That's going to be an interesting discussion. From a historical point of view Flames of War gives much better results btw. |

kallman | 15 Mar 2008 9:09 a.m. PST |
As vojvoda stated the jury is still out as the rules for FoG have only been out a little less than a month. Based upon what I saw looking at a copy at Cold Wars I will not be giving up WAB. It appeared to me that FoG was just a rehash of DBX which is a game system that just does not interest me. Each to their own but for me I have all I need to run WAB and plenty of folks to game WAB with. |

Round these parts we prefer fried chicken, but sometimes we like to have some fried pig. Today I think we're in a fried chicken mood. It's so hard to say for how long that will last, because just when we think we know which one we like best, and which we want on a particular day, along comes an advert that changes our mind! Perhaps we will have a bit of both today
would that be greedy? I see that someone has brought up fried goat
like many we've never tried fried goat even though the fried goat chef swears by it. He said that it tastes better and more satisfying than either the chicken or bacon. The problem is that we're not so sure, but I may have a taste one day
if I can find some friends who are willing to try some with me. I hate eating alone! |
elcid1099 | 15 Mar 2008 9:15 a.m. PST |

Clears Throat; Giggles a bit. steps up. Ahem. As a serious ancient gamer, it sickens me when Wargaming takes a backward step, as it has with FoG. I thought element-based figures went out with DBM? People who play WAB know that no Jonny-come-lately game will replace it as top tournament game. WAB has been going for ten years now – I can't see FoG replacing it. the makers of FoG don't seem to realise that High Production values and flashy books don't a game make. And why have they decided to make this a 15mm game? WAB is the best game in the world, and it's played with 28mm figures singly based. If FoG's designers were serious about picking up us serious Historical Wargamers they would have adopted the now standard 28mm single-based 20mmm square system we WAB players use. It seems to me this is just a marketing ploy to sell figures, and Osprey Books with their bright colourful pictures that, appealing as they may be to kids and unserious types, hurt my old eyes and clash badly with my cardigan. Giggles Ohhh I have been longing to say stuff like that about an ancients game for AGES. Pat |

Pat, Pat, Pat
You just haven't got a handle on this irrational rule-bashing, do you? First, you must have a much higher level of ignorance regarding the subject rules. Then you must make far more irrational and off-the-wall judgements than you have done. Please work on it. Oh, and the suck muppeting needs work, too. Allen |

We, highly esteemed members of the Guild of Most Serious Hysterical Wargamers sternly disapprove the immature giggling of Sane Max, who tries to pass himself as a Serious Historical Wargamer. To correct the error of his ways, we suggest that he head to Castle Anthrax for punishment. Griefbringer |
XRaysVision | 15 Mar 2008 10:14 a.m. PST |
I agree! FoG is just another rehash of DBx! Even a cursory glance by the most casual of observers and the similarities abound! They BOTH have: A. Multiple figures per base! B. Use little horses to represent horses! C. Use little soldiers to represent soldiers! D. Use rulers to measure distances! E. Played on terrain tables! F. Use dice! Naturally, there can only be ONE explanation for this! FoG is just DBx warmed over
certainly NOT like that other completely unique game with it's characters, standards, musicians, and magicians, err, I mean shamans/priests/whatever
(that ought to stir the pot a bit) |

Martin Rapier | 15 Mar 2008 11:43 a.m. PST |
I thought FOG _was_ just DBx warmed over? DBM at any rate, with a dash of HoTT. Now, if only they could get armies down to 12 elements I'd be happy
I ed if I'm painting any more Gauls, ever. |

I own both WAB and FoG and I can tell you beyond a reasonable doubt that one of them is better! |
