I have a really large Roman and Celt armies in 28mm and have been using WAB but is there anything more one figure equals one man rules out there to use? I have heard of SAGA but never played it would that work, is that a one figure represents one man rule set. |

SAGA requires a 'battleboard' for each army/faction. There was certainly discussion of periods outwith the Dark Ages on the SAGA forum, but I can't remember if Romans and Gauls were among them. It would certainly all be unofficial. |

"Saga-Aetius and Arthur" is due for release. Saga for your period! Below is a link to the "Wargames Illustrated" introduction. link |

As others said, it is a 1 to 1 game, and it would work, but you would need to either create your own battleboards, or pick existing battleboards as "counts-as" boards. The Viking battleboard would work well for Celts, not sure about Romans. The new expansion might be easier to adapt, just use Saxons or Goths for Celts, and Romans as… Romans. Maybe give the Legionaries "javelins" under the SAGA rules to represent pila. All that said, be aware the SAGA is a very unusual game. It is not a typical skirmish game. The special abilities on the battleboards is really the core of the game. There are no detailed rules for specific weapons (with a couple exceptions), no formations or facing, and only some very abstracted morale rules. (There are no morale checks, break points, etc, except in certain scenarios. The closest thing to a morale rule is that units pick up a "Fatigue" point is a friendly unit is wiped out in melee nearby). |

Note that "Saga: Aetius and Arthur" requires both the Saga rulebook and the Crescents and Cross rulebook, especially for the Romans. There are special rules in the latter rulebook for the Roman faction. This is pointed out in the Wargames Illustrated flip through (linked above). |

"This supplement, that can be used either with SAGA Dark Ages Skirmishes or SAGA The Crescent & The Cross, comes with six Battle Boards for Aetius & Arthur. Can not be sold separately." Seems to suggest you need one OR the other rule book. |

Indeed it does, but as Dale points out, the WI through-flipper(?) found passages in A & A that refer you to both previous incarnations of the game, so a fully-functioning supplement will be a VERY expensive indulgence. Does Studio Tomahawk do post-Christmas sales? |

"All that said, be aware the SAGA is a very unusual game." Word! |

Late Romans are a far cry from Caesarean/Early Imperial Romans vs. Celts/Britons! I don't think this would give you the right flavor. I'm sure there is something out there that would. Here are a few ideas: TMP link |

I'm not sure that the scale suits Romans. A late republican/early Imperial legion approaches 5,000; most identically armed and equipped. For a small skirmish you are unlikely to get auxiliaries added to a legion centaury. |

@gavandjosh02 – I could see skirmish working for some scenarios: 1. Roman forage party of a contubernium or two ambushed 2. Pompeian and Caesarean troops mixing it up in a tavern fight 3. Tax collector with Roman troop guard attacked by villagers 4. Survivors of a larger battle mixing it up before disengaging Stuff like that. |

WD – you are right and those would give good games. |

My thoughts were to use to different episodes from Simon Scarrow's books which I really enjoy. |

Well I'm sure Osprey will have something like this along in the not too distant future. |

You say you have a very large army -- in Saga you'll only be using ~40 figures in a warband. If you want to get all your toys on the table, try Hail Caesar. |

I have enough for two complete centuries and about 225 celts not counting mounted units. So I like the idea of one figure representing one man. |
