Has anyone tried using Dux Britanniarum for a "Back of Beyond" setting? I haven't played the rules but the general impression I have is that it wouldn't be too big a stretch to have a group of warlords squabbling over 1920s-30s Manchuria rather than dark ages Britian

The campaign system maybe but not the main rules. You would be better off with Through the Mud and the Blood for the actual combat.

The campaign system would work pretty well. You need a numeric scale for the degree of victory, and a "results chart" to advance the campaign based on that.

I'm not sure I get how you map dark age shieldwall combat to interwar combat featuring firearms and even machine guns. I agree with the suggestion for Through The Mud and The Blood, which is a fantastic rule set, or even Troops, Weapons, and Combat, or even Chain of Command. Otherwise you're going to have to overhaul Dux B to the point where it won't even be anything resembling Dux B any more, and why would you want to do that? Maybe you could modify the campaign system if that's what you like…

Ok sounds like a bad idea. I haven't played any of those rules sets but the campaign in DB sounded like it could be the basis for other periods. Oh well.

It could. But, as stated above, you'll need another set to game out the battles.

The campaign rules would be very easy to morph across with Chain of Command which uses a very similar force morale system, so levels of victory could be worked out that way.

Obviously you'd use the combat rules from the WWII rules and the Dux Bretonium campaign system. Great idea. I may give this a go myself.

For the combat take a look at A World Aflame (Osprey).
