Dyrrhachium – 1081 Once again I attended one of my favorite conventions. Yes the hall is pretty old and broken up into disjointed areas on two floors and the area hotels leave a lot to be desired. Even worse this year our favorite breakfast place (IHOP) wouldn't open until 7AM, gr but none of these things changed my mind. I had a great time as usual. First off may I thank my dear friend Dick Bryant, former editor of The Courier Magazine for playing the Turks in my game. It is always a pleasure to game with him. I ran a scenario based loosely on the Battle of Dyrrhachium – 1081. The Normans have invaded Byzantium and now face the main Byzantine army under Alesius I. Normans knights square off against the famed Verangian mercenaries. The fate of Byzantium swings in the balance.

Looks good, Chris. We had a great weekend at Havoc as well. Any interest in running out a game of KATMA sometime for all of us who played them as kids? |

He refers to my first set of rules called Knighthood and the Middle ages. The red book. I don't think I own enough d6 any more to run it :) Chris |

I really enjoyed the AAR! I went ahead and ordered my copy of the Norman's book. Are the Byzantine lists in that book? Can't wait to go through the book! Thanks, John |

My pleasure. I said before I needed to order the second book. I should have done it before now. I will likely pick up the Crusader book at some point. Once painting enough equals armies done to do the Crusades! Thanks, John |

Thanks John and just a plug here. My book covers all the crusades not just the ones we are used to centering around the Kingdom of Jerusalem. It covers Spain and the Reconquest, the Northern Baltic states and the Albergensian Crusade. Chris Parker |

Enjoyed the game but found that the opposing crossbows were deadly. Having to take the first hit on troops that can only handle 3 (or is it 2?) can quickly put your forces in flight. As to the available passage along the table edge to the rear of the woods, A member of my club always uses edge-of-the-table strategies if available to him. We hate that so much that we have rule that any terrain less than 3" from the table edge IS AT the table edge and the apparent path is not useable. This mind-set probably got into the way of my scouting that "rear passage"! I was only effective at the beginnin because my first 3 cards were an Ace, A joker and a Jack!!!!! |

As Dick writes on his blog (http://kingstonirregulars.blogspot.com/) "No scenario survives first contact with a wargamer" Anyway I am glad you had fun. I would hesitatingly have to agree that the crossbows seem a bit strong. Of course these have been out and used for 3 or 4 years now. One modification might be to say they only do the auto hit result on the first strike at close range 0-12". This way lighter troops with a range of greater than 12" could hover at long range and pick away. Horsebows for example have a max range of 15". I will try that at my game at Havoc later this year.
