Hi all,

I finally got to a point with my 15mm Carthaginian field camp project, where I feel I can show it off properly.

I'll use it for Field of Glory, but it surely will see some use under other rule systems, too.

It still lacks the miniatures that will eventually dwell in it, but all the basic stuff is finished.

Now I'll add some more detailing (shields, spears, food etc.) and three camp life scenes:

An Iberian Scutari, Bagarok, and a Numidian, Micipsa, are playing a dice game. A veteran spearmen would start his guard duty and finally a Gaul would paint a shield design on one of the scuta (not pictured). It would also be nice to have a soldier crawling in one of the tents, after his guard duty is over. The left tent will be open and one can look inside, maybe with a sleeping soldier wrapped in his cloak.

I might add a slave who cares for the oxen, and a woman coming down the road at a later point, when I tackle the second module of the camp. This will also be the time to add fortifications.

To add some interest Baueda amphorae, a spit roasted fish, a little singing bird (both from the Busch Kleintierset) and various shields were added.

Here a normal and a scenic picture of what I have so far:

A step-by-step tutorial can be found on my blog as well as more pictures of the construction process:

Those look really fantastic, thanks for posting. Can I ask what grass product you use? It's a much better color than what I've been using.

@whitejamest: I use a variety of MiniNatur products. I mostly go for the late fall or fall variety of their ground cover, so that it is not too bright. To draw it all together I always apply a brown wash to the grass.

Looks awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent. Can you advise as to what kind of "tissue" you used? Are you talking tissue for blowing one's nose, or tissue paper that is used for wrapping packages?

That looks terrible. You need to get rid of it before it embarrasses you. Please box it up and ship it to me so I can dispose of it properly. evil grin

Seriously, that camp is a gorgeous work of art. You are an artisan par excellence. If the rest of your ancients collection looks that nice, I may have to abandon my life and career and move next door.

@Pan Marek: I use normal 3ply facial tissues. The important part is, that they don't have any patterns on them ;). The Terrain Tutor recommends makeup removal tissues or baby wipes, that are dried out. These are more resilient, but I did not have any handy.

@Yellow Admiral: Thank you very much. I am glad you would dispose of it (presumably gaming with it till it falls apart :P), but as of now I feel my troops need it more ;). My ancients collection is too small to warrant travelling around the world, but maybe in ten years we can talk about it :D.

However, thank you again for your kind comment, much appreciated.

Great work!

Very pretty, but what's distinctively Punic about it?

Peithetairos31 Oct 2014 11:19 p.m. PST

The miniatures that will inhabit it and the designs of shields resting against some proped up spears. :) The general layout is not very distinctive and could be used for many people in various periods.

Which is a wise plan.

Lovely work there!

So, after some more time has passed I finally finished the camp element. I might add some more modules with fortifications ad so on. As always more pictures and a detailed step-by-step tutorial on my blog:

A scenic picture to give you an idea what I added in the meantime:

And a detail shot of the dice players and foodstuff:

The shields are not fixed and can be replaced with thureoi if I want to go for Hannibal in Italy.
