I've only briefly read through Hail Caesar, but it seems my 2-3K pointed WAB armies may not be enough troop-wise for Hail Caesar (HC) armies. At least the way they are currently based. I suppose with the flexibility of unit sizes for HC, I could stretch out my WAB armies, but that would mean a lot new unit stands. Anyone else had this issue? Best, Dean |

Maybe you should look at Clash of Empires and/or War and Conquest too? Seriously though, a good question. I've been curious about this too, not wanting to double, or triple my current WAB armies, or find two or three other players with the same armies just to play these rules. |

A standard, 12 unit – 300 point, HC army is going to be considerably bigger than a 2000 point WAB army. A normal force is going to be around 200 infantry + 20 cavalry. Solutions include: Play teams, HC is designed for multiplayer games. Have each player bring 1 or 2 divisions. Use smaller units. HC will play just as well if the units are 10 figures wide or 5 figures wide. Buy more figures :) |

RtC: You've pretty much answered my question(s). Thanks. Ha! Buy more figs, indeed! Best, Dean P.S. Rassilon – just keep painting for Black Powder! |

I use 2-3k WAB armies but play on a 6 x 4 table and the units are small by HC standards (8 x 2 foot or 4 x 2 mounted). If you buy more figures you might need a bigger table too because the unit frontages are typically bigger. |

Another solution is one rarely met: use smaller armies of only one division and one general. You still have a quick and fun game without having to paint another 200 figures and the game plays a lot faster too ( a must IMO, since HC can be terribly slow). |

I used 12 figures infantry and 6 figures cavalry units few times I played HC. This effectively will double your WAB armies and will not affect your HC game mechanics. In fact, you may even be able to play on smaller table. |

Interesting solutions. I suppose I need to give it a try with my existing armies – of course, reconfigured on smaller unit stands. I wonder how it would appear though? I do like the look of larger (more figs per) units – yet I don't plan on painting up more figures at the moment. Thanks again everyone for some great input/ideas. Dean |

@Pijlie: The trouble with playing only one division is leadership failure. Its rather common to have a division stand around and do nothing for a turn or three. No big deal if you have 3 divisions (actually adds to the late game drama when a fresh division hits the battle line), but I could see it making for a poor game if its your one and only division. |

I've been using about 36-42 man units of infantry and 12 man cavalry units. I found that my WAB armies fit well with HC, although I never limited my WAB armies by any kind of points. |

@Pijlie: The trouble with playing only one division is leadership failure. Its rather common to have a division stand around and do nothing for a turn or three. I can only say it occurred only a few times (CR being 9) and was no less annoying than in a larger game, which would have been a lot slower and hence even more annoying, now that I think of it. I still say itīs worth a try. |
