i am very clsoe to being able to host a HC game set in the dark ages; 3 divisions per side, 4-6 units per division.

i have maybe around 50 more miniatures to paint, and i'm getting very tired of painting guys holding spears and swords and what not.

my goal is to host a 6 player game at Kublacon, which is plenty far away, but the more minis i paint the bigger and badder the game can be.

help my motivation to continue and tell me how awesome your HC games are…

or is the bloom off the rose and people aren't as infatuated with HC as they once were?

I ran two sessions of an 8 player HC game at Little Wars 2014. Both games were good fun & most of the players had little or no experience with Hail Caesar. Through out the day I had people coming up looking for tickets – don't know if that was because HC is popular, or if people just like a grand battle in 28mm.

I'll be running the same event at Adepticon 2015 and am equally busy painting new figures for the game.

I still like. It's my go to rules for big battle pre-gunpowder games.

It took a bit of adjusting after WarHammer Ancients but I quite like it – we recently ran a game with a couple of gamers new to Ancients and it ran very well – it is a great beer and pretzels set of rules

I also find that it makes it more challenging to play Romans, as they are not the all-conquering wall of iron in HC that they are in WH Ancients

leidang16 Jan 2015 12:20 p.m. PST

It's all we play locally any more.

I can put together our Dark Ages mods and unit stats to send you if you like. We have done a ton of Viking, Saxon, Welsh, and Norman fights and have put together our own set of leader and unit abilities, as well as a more detailed version of the shieldwall ability.

An Excellent set of rules together with Black Power. We play all the time, games get bigger and bigger. We all look forward to yhe next game.

Still popular at our club

i feel a surge in energy and i thank you! now to rush home and finish basing some vikings! i'm new to my club after moving here but have not seen much talk of HC, but maybe i can change that when i start hosting some games.

@ Cid; that looks cool and I'm using a similar set up, individual based on movement trays. Mine are from shogun miniatures as well! funny how those are popping up everywhere i look now. : )

@ Leidang: that sounds super helpful actually! I am also primarily focusing on Vikings, saxons, and normans. and I've been thinking about special leader abilities for guys like Guthrum, Alfred, Willaim, Harold, the other Harold, and so on. the first mod i've heard and liked is that everyone gets the clsoe ranks ability, not just heavy infantry.

i'll PM you with my email address.

glad people are still having fun with the rules.

We try and play once a month – good thing about the Rules is that you discover something in each game that you have overlooked! Having unit cards is a great idea and helps old grey cells remember special features.

Good thing about Hail Caesar is that you can tweak here and there with special features and characteristics. Rules give the points needed.

My wargamer colleague Mike has put most of our games on his blog, last one was before XMAS:

At the same time we may have a look at other options like SAGA, Lion Rampant and Sword & Spear.

My group only got a few games in before the campaign died due to other activities. We are planning on starting again this summer as we have two more players painting forces now.

I will have to look for Ran's game at Adepticon. Looks like it will be a blast.

@Stew Shogun Miniatures metal trays. Only way to go…

Das Sheep16 Jan 2015 11:45 p.m. PST

I like it, even if I don't play as much as I paint.

Hail Caesar and Black Powder pretty much dominates our games in their respective period. Only ECW and ACW has (so far) resisted the march of the BP genre as we stil play "Regiment of foote" and Fire and fury.

mex10mm17 Jan 2015 10:56 a.m. PST

Yes; Great rules for fun games!

frostydog17 Jan 2015 2:55 p.m. PST

Excellent set of rules a lot better and more practical than Black Powde. Saying that most of our group have moved on to Impetus.

HarryHotspurEsq18 Jan 2015 10:57 a.m. PST

I really enjoy it, though in our group, each of us have a single niggly thing we don't like. For me it is that heavy inf move the same speed as light inf or skirmishers. Otherwise, still top of my list!

Stew art Supporting Member of TMP20 Jan 2015 9:39 a.m. PST

ah, so this last weekend i finished another 12 vikings to join 'the great pagan army.'

yeah, the movement rates are uniform. one special rule /house rule that I have seen is that medium and light infantry get a -1 to their orders roll (to make it more likely that they will move and be able to move further) to orders that are NOT charges.

it also might help to give some units the marauding special rule if their role is to circle the flank.

i've only played 2 games of HC, and it seems pretty scenario dependant if you don't want it to become just a scrum in the middle (which is fine and good fun too, and accurate as i think most dark battles were that way).

Bowman24 Jan 2015 6:57 p.m. PST

I don't know about the rest of the "people", but I enjoy it.

desert dude04 May 2015 8:39 p.m. PST

Just got the rules, will be at Kublacon and will play at least one game. Looking forward to it.

Kealios21 Jul 2015 10:47 p.m. PST

I also just got the rules, though I admit it was because of the Fantasy lists on Ady's site…

I think this some has some fantastic improvements over Warmaster and WMA, but I havent played a game yet…looking forward to it!

@leidang: I would be quite interested in your rules. Could you forward them to gbertaiola@gmail.com? Thanks!
