I'm diving into a 10mm project of Caesar's conquest of Gaul, and want to pick out nice figures. I've been looking at Steve Barber and Magister Militum (the wallet's least favorite option) in particular, might consider Pendraken but their range doesn't look quite as nice (it's kinda showing its age), am leery of Old Glory due to high amounts of flash and lower sculpt quality.

What's your favorite range of 10 or 12mm ancients that offers Caesarian/Marian Romans and Barbarians who pass for Gauls from a foot off? Bonus question: Would you use Steve Barber's Early Germans as Gauls? No, I don't want to use 28s or 6mm. Thanks for any help you can offer?

Our ranges are indeed looking a bit old, so we've got brand new Romans and Gauls to be released before the end of this month!

The Gallic sculpts can be seen here: link and the Romans are here: link (scroll down a bit)

There's only 3 production moulds left to be done, so we'll have those completed in the next fortnight and everything released asap.

I'm surprised to hear of flash on the OG--my WSS & AWI had none at all, just some strings of metal coming off bayonet tips, which were easily removed. Anyone else experience this on the ancients?

Take a look at Adler as well.

Avoid Adler – pretty, but very flimsy.

Leon those look awesome! Steve Barber are probably about the best, but I would be tempted to wait to get the first batch from Pendraken. Shipping from Steve Barber has always been pricey for those of us in the US.

I saw these on a convention a few months ago: link

Very realistic proportions and the detail is crazy. They had a microscope set up so you could see it all.

All of the Van Dyke minis are simply wonderful! While not a big ancients fan, their 10mm WWI range is also excellent.(They have Belgians!!!)

Not seen these before, look to be excellent figures. I like the fact that, on his home page, he sets out exactly what he means by 10-12mm. I trust that this will mean great consistency within his ranges, a point which some other manufacturers might note.

Thanks for all the input!

Having looked at the new Pendraken, I'll probably go with those for the Gauls, those are some fine looking minis.

Roman-wise, the new Pendraken and the Van Dyke are a bit later than what I'm looking for, but I could see myself going Old Glory now, I'd heard some horror stories about their ECW range, but it sounds like the stories were just that. Plus the strips will provide nice tight ranks to contrast with the looser barbarian formations.

Of course this is all assuming I don't see some beautiful sculpts in another scale and go back on my no 28s policy between now and Leon's releases (probably not, all my trees are for 10mm, but who knows). Such are the problems of a wargamer.

And again, thanks for al the input.

Well you have a lot of nice different ranges in the scale to choose from, its a nice scale for ancients.
