Not really happy with current Dark Age rules I have and I'm looking at purchasing Hail Caesar at Cold Wars to fill that need and possibly to fill the need for my Roman vs Celt interests. So on to the Dark Ages. I have large Viking and Saxon armies in 28mm that are based as singles on 20x20 squares. How does HC work for shield wall armies and I assume my basing will be fine as long as I use movement trays. Please let me know your thoughts on HC and the Dark Ages. |

I'm looking towards playing games set in the Dark Ages using Hail Caesar rules. But I haven't gotten the troops ready yet. I plan to assemble Anglo-Danes and Normans to start with. And I will be doing my forces in 15mm. I'm not familiar with the rules yet. But, as I've enjoyed Black Powder so much, I'm fairly confident I won't be disappointed. |

Played a few games of ancients and liked the rules. We've been building dark age forces but haven't actually played them yet. Archery is not very powerful except in the possible forced morale check. |

I am very happy with Hail Caesar for the Late Antiquity/Early Dark Ages games I play in. I have 28mm Late Imperial Romans on individual 20x20mm bases I place on movement trays. You should be able to pick up at Cold Wars pretty easily. I have seen multiple vendors carry it a previous conventions. I will be at Cold Wars too. If you wanted to get together and do a small pick up game sometime during the convention we could try it. A small game of one division on each side would be an easy trial. |

Thanks guys and yes Diocletian284 I may be interested in a game or two. I have not checked the PEL yet to see if there were any HC games either. |

i use HC for dark ages all the time. I have Saxons, Vikings, and Normans. I think the close combat really mirrors the push and shove of a shield wall. the only modification I do is let all formed units 'close ranks,' not just heavy infantry. my guys are based on 25mm rounds, so yes movement trays is all you need. my medium units are 125mm frontage. table is 5 x 8. |

This is good to know as Im working on my own DA imagination army. They were built using WF 28's, combining Saxon / Viking, the armored for "regular troops", and unarmored for villiage milita / light infantry. I use 4 25mm/1 in. sqr. bases glued together to form each base of 4 figures. Originally they were based to be uesd indivdually w movemnt trays, but the occasional 'tip over' got on my nerves. LOL Im looking to add German / Celtic for the barbarians. Possibly add fantasy to it, Frostgraves new Gnolls look great, maybe too good to pass up. |

Possibly add fantasy to it, Frostgraves new Gnolls look great, maybe too good to pass up. Shadow Storm is a fan-made adaptation to the Hail Ceasar rules. I have never used them but I believe there are several that do- there is a Shadow Storm Facebook group as well but I don't know how active it is. |
