This past weekend the HAWKs (Harford Area Weekly Kriegspielers) made a road trip down to the NASHCON gaming convention near Nashville, TN, to host over a dozen games. Featured among these games were four demo games of our upcoming rules for Fantasy, Ancients, and Medieval mass combat, "Bear Yourselves Valiantly" (BYV).
I ran a Battle of Five Armies scenario Friday and Saturday and Dave Wood ran a Elves vs Goblins and Ratlings scenario and a Romans vs Barbarians scenario.

We were very pleased with the way our BYV games went, and had a great time at the convention in general. The players seemed to really enjoy the rules, some coming back to play in more than one of our games. Many of the participants were eager to know when the rules would be available, and we were happy to tell them it wouldn't be long now as we plan to have them released for Historicon in July.

The HAWKS had a wonderful effect on Nashcon; they were sort of like the high-end cornerstone store in a mall. I was busy as hell running two twenty-four foot games and shooting photos of all the games and vendors. Still I got to play in the HAWKS WWI game which was a hoot. By the end of the game I was attacking and shooting and having a wonderful time……as the French right Brigade. Duncan was so patient with us, since we never played the rules system before. The activation rule was unique and once I got the point of it the thing worked great. Thanks guys for coming all that way.
Here is a photo shot from a very early recon plane.

Looks great. I am keenly interested in these rules now too, as I have been looking for a good MASS scale fantasy ruleset.

I want to integrate it with my long time homebrew fantasy RPG campaign setting, and the wars in my world are big…. 10s of thousands, and the rulesets I have tried always seem lacking. I like what I am seeing here and will keep an eye open for them.

James-
Yes, there's a good chance BYV will be what you're looking for. Stands represent about 300-500 troops, so fielding armies of 10's of thousands is easy.
If you haven't done so already, be sure to check out the rules' webpage:

Nashville-
Thank you for the kind remarks. We had a blast, and hope to return in the future.

Chris will BYV be for sale as a PDF or just in hardcopy.

Unless I find them at a show, and I only attend 2 a year these days,I seem to buy only PDFs these days.

Be looking out for these though, should be good for my 1000's
of 2mm guys.

kodiakblair-
I do not think our publisher, On Military Matters, offers PDF versions at this time.
However, I do believe that he attends a show or two in the UK, so you may be able to hook up with a copy there.

I think the rules would be great for use with 2mm troops.

That's too bad. I rarely buy rulesbooks in print now. Might make an exception for these, but the PDF convenience of purchase, storage and use generally keep me away from paper these days.

Chris bearing in mind the nature of OMM's business it makes sense to sell in print.

For the same reasons as Darth I stick too PDF, that and costs.
I'm afraid I'm a product of my time, still stuck in the 80's

Still you never know

Well I eagerly await them. Am I correct in assuming they are not yet available? I saw your blog and it looked like they were in progress.

Looking forward to trying them with some 10mm.

James-
Yes you are correct that they are not yet in print. Our goal is to have them available in time for Historicon in July.

We are hoping they will be available through A figure manufacturer in the UK, but we haven't really engaged with them on this yet. No promises.

What size bases were those for the 25mm figures- 3 inches wide? How detailed is the magic (I prefer the game be decided mainly by the maneuvering of the rank & file troops and not by overpowered magic). Can the game be easily played "pick-up style" where an opponent and I throw down some terrain and troops on a 4'x6' table and have a fairly well balanced experience?

Chris Palmer02 Jun 2014 6:52 a.m. PST

The standard base width is 3". Both the 10mm and the 25mm troops are based on bases that are that wide. Dave Wood (owner of the 25mm armies shown) increased the depth only to hold the 25mm figures.

We agree totally on your views about magic. A magic user base (which is actually assumed to be a high level magic user and about a half a dozen to a dozen or so assistants/acolytes/trainees) will have a low fire factor, short range attack which is considered to be some sort of close in personal defense attack like magic missles, fireball etc., that may be able to do a single hit on a unit (units take three hits before being eliminated)that gets too close to him. Then, depending on the level of the magic user, he will have anywhre from 3 to 11 "Battle Spells" that we assume he has memorized for the occasion and are one-time use per game. These will mainly effect only one or two enemy (or friendly) units, and mainly be morale/movement/or combat effectiveness related. Most of thse spells are not very long in range too, so the wizard will need to be near the front lines and at risk to perform them. He won't be standing on some far off hill wiping out whole units with lightening bolts.

Yes, the game will be able to be played pick-up style. There will be a point system included that will allow players to stat up forces of equivalent points (we find about 1000 pts per player is about right) and have a reasonably balanced battle.
