Just wanted to let everybody know that our rules for mass Fantasy, Ancients, and Medieval combat, "Bear Yourselves Valiantly", was sent off to the publisher, On Military Matters, today and is on track to be released to coincide with Fall-In this autumn.

For more info, see the rules' website:

What's the retail on this?

Love the cover!

We won't know the retail price until we hear back from the publisher. While this won't be an contest winning figure painting eye candy hard cover extravaganza, there are a lot of color figures inside, which drives up costs. My guess is that it will retail between $20 USD and $30 USD, but only the publisher will know for sure.

Will there be a rules PDF made available like many other LMW works titles?

Chris Palmer05 Sep 2014 3:19 p.m. PST

We're not sure at this point. We have switched publishers to On Military Matters now.

There's additional information about the rules here: link

There are also some useful downloads of rosters and label sheets to support those who purchase the rules.

Been interested in these since I first read about your initial playtests. There is a big hole commercially for a big battle fantasy set using 6-15mm figs. Since I'm such a huge fan of your other rules ala Gaslight and Battles by Gaslight I'll be getting a copy.

At 52 my eyes are still pretty good. Will the labels be large enough that I can still make everything out fairly easily?

Thanks and congratulations on this pending release!

John-
You'll recognize the activation system almost exactly from Battles by GASLIGHT.
As most of the author team and many of the playtesters are 50+, I think you should be ok regarding the labels. If not, we supply an easy to fill out roster sheet in the rules for those that wish to go labelless.

I'll also take this opportunity to add that the rules will contain six 1000 pt example armies, with labels all ready to print out and use.

And thanks for the congrats!

Definitely interested in these. . .but what are the special six-siders required to play?

Chris Palmer06 Sep 2014 8:29 a.m. PST

They are blank dice with sticker facing applied. The facings are supplied in the rulebook, and are easily copied and printed out on a sheet of sticker paper, cut out and applied to the blank dice. Some of the guys use the wooden cubes readily available at craft stores instead of the commercially available blank dice.

They act as short cuts instead of using charts for things like morale results, and results for attempts to charge, and to stand and receive a charge. Instead of rolling a d6, and then cross referencing the result on a chart, the result is printed right on a d6. It seems like it would only save seconds per dice roll, but over the course of a whole game it can add a lot of time to actually playing the game.

If you don't wish to use the special dice, you don't have to. The uncut sheet of dice labels acts as a handy chart. Just roll a standard d6, and cross reference with the appropriate label.

The dice labels, blank base labels, and roster that Chris mentioned is availar on the Web site mentioned earlier. I posted them as free downloads in anticipation of the rules' release.

I found a place that walked you through a turn in steps. Great stuff! I also became more excited by a game using 25mm figs. I have loads painted and it inspired me to try it with those first.

I always thought that the Normans had Orc allies to help them win at Hastings….

The Beast Rampant08 Sep 2014 9:27 p.m. PST

A lot of Targets have (or at least had until recently) "Army vs Aliens", "Pirate vs Ninja", etc, dice games at deep discount. I bought several sets for the dice- they have recessed labels. Soak, scrape, voila: custom dice that are easier on the decals.

I DO know that their RISK: Battlefield Evolution is still around at around $7 USD (or less). It has nice recessed (initially) unlabeled, dice (five?), around 1". The plastic bits can be useful, too.

Chris Palmer09 Sep 2014 5:08 a.m. PST

Thanks for the hint on the dice! I may have to go look for some of those myself.

Here is the turn example that John mentioned. It's actually an example page from the bbok dealing with attack sequence:
