FoG-r suggests an unfortified camp for my 20mm Renaissance armies of 180mm X 160mm. This is large. I've been fudging it so far but I want to make something fairly decent….& storable! I have suitable sundry wagons etc painted & a few spare, individually based figures. Rather than create a permanent diorama which will be hard to store, it occurred to me that a blank cardboard base might meet my needs & not look too shabby. The card, a thick one I use for figure bases, would have basing compound, static grass & flock added. I could loosely place the tents, wagons & figures on it. This would look like a decent casual camp IMO. Your thoughts/comments? |

I use a similar method for my DBA camps, a camp base conforming to size requirements with tentage, wagons, servants and flag or banner showing ownership placed loosely on top. To make storage less a problem, you may want to cut the base into two equal halves of 90mm x 160mm for example. Cheers, |

When I put together my medieval siege layout, I included a large camp. You can see it in pics 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22 of my Medieval Gallery at warin15mm.com/Medieval-.html |

The card, a thick one I use for figure bases, would have basing compound, static grass & flock added. I could loosely place the tents, wagons & figures on it. That's an excellent solution, easy and fast and cheap. If you want to be only slightly more elaborate, make a few: one open, one with a palisade, one with a ditch and embankment, etc. An alternative is to compose your camps from smaller diorama sections that can be gathered together into a block (e.g. 60mm x 60mm sections). Then you can re-use many camp components across multiple nations (e.g. tents and cooking areas) and create a small diorama specific to each nation (with the royal colors, the Swiss guard, the Sultan's eunuchs, the Papal throne-wagon, etc.) to put in the middle. - Ix |

That is large and the size suggested for 25-28mm scale; could you not go for the 15mm scaled 120mm x 80mm? As Yellow Admiral suggested it is always nice to do something specific for the army. I have done a Longship for Vikings, a pre-fabricated wooden castle for the Normans, Homer's black Ships drawn up on a beach for Mycenaeans etc etc. Or as one of my club colleagues does deploy a generic camp of wagons for whatever army he is fielding! |

@ Ves. 20mm uses the larger basing sizes. I suppose there's a reason to be consistent. Thanks for the ideas but anything permanent on such a big base is a storage issue….I do like Yellow Admiral's idea though. |

If storage is really an issue, don't base anything; just make a palisade or ditch+embankment in 60mm sections (plus a few corner and gate pieces). Outline the camp area with the camp wall, place a bunch of campy stuff inside, done. All your miscampellania breaks down to fit in a single box. - Ix |
