Yesterday I had a dry run of the Chalons scenario I will be putting on at the Society of Ancients Battle day in April. We used Comitatus rules and had a great game in which the Visigothic King Theodoric played a particularly heroic part.

"Arise, arise, Riders of Theodoric! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! Spears shall be shaken, Shields shall be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now!"

I've posted some photos of the main protagonists on my blog:-

It was a corking game.

A great looking game, the sort of mass effect I aspire to one day achieving! I look forward to further instalments.

The second instalment is now up on the blog. link

Great stuff. I'm looking forward to trying out our version at one point, based on Simon's scenario.

Here's to the Two Simons!

Simon,

Great looking game! What were the dimensions of the playing space on your table?

15mm figures on an 8 ft x 6 ft table.
Ideally I think I would like another foot width to separate the hill a bit more from the main battle lines. But 8 x 6 did give us enough space to work with.

This is excellent -where does the cloth come from?

smacdowall22 Oct 2012 12:38 p.m. PST

The cloth is quite simply a sheet of felt which I first spray painted with a mix of flat earthy colours then flocked. Further down on my blog I show what I did to achieve the effect

Very nice Theoderic. That looks like the Essex late Roman General with one of their separate shields added.

If anyone wants to see the discussions and sources on the Battleday and on Chalons then, if a Society member, go to soa.org.uk and look on the Forums pages.

smacdowall23 Oct 2012 9:24 a.m. PST

Yes Lewisgunner, you are correct. He is Essex as are the majority of his men – with various head swaps and minor conversions

Lewisgunner24 Oct 2012 10:25 a.m. PST

But he is turning to a magister Militum Goth, one of those with the moveable arm?
Roy

smacdowall24 Oct 2012 1:24 p.m. PST

No, actually an Essex body with a Magister Militum head

Lewisgunner26 Oct 2012 3:02 p.m. PST

Of course you are right Simon, looks like the body of an Essex Roman cavalryman to me.
Neat join!

OMG. Wargamers obsessed with miniature body parts. LOL!
Good on yer, Mates.

@VL There's a place for creative modelling here too. Sure you can spray troops yellow, wash with Army Painter, pick out the faces and steel and then put transfers on the shields, but Simon's stuff is high art and should be appreciated as such.

Yes, Simon's 15's are little gems, with lots of conversions and detailing that would not look out of place on a 28mm miniature.

The more I know about Aetius, the more I wonder how was he able to live as long as he did. Nice looking 15's by the way!

smacdowall05 Nov 2012 6:34 a.m. PST

I suspect his survival owed a great deal to the Huns

Lewisgunner05 Nov 2012 9:11 a.m. PST

And arguably defeating them rather weakened his position as he was no longer indispensable and in true Late Roman style was then dispensed with.
Roy

smacdowall05 Nov 2012 11:16 a.m. PST

That would seem to be the case

He was a hostage as a youth with the Huns and also seem to be on the frontier with Goths. I still think it's incredible that he lasted so long! Definitely would like to hear more from Mr.Boss.
