Last night, my 15 year old son "Scott" and I had the opportunity to play the not yet released War and Conquest rules by Rob Broom. Below you will find a reflection of our wargaming experience. Firstly we found the rules quick and easy to learn. Rob had clearly aimed the game mechanics with this objective in mind however the game still offers the players a depth to their gaming experience without the tedious need to refer to endless charts and rule clarifications. Obviously we did have the benefit of the author over seeing the game; however no situations arose that felt uncomfortable to manage and the rules appeared to offer a sensible approach. The little twists and turns that Rob has built into the game phases made the game less predictable than other games I have played and this encourages the players to not only think about their current and subsequent turns but also what may happen if they loose the initiative and their opponent ends up with two consecutive game turns. With fast moving armies this could have a major impact on the battle (very exciting element which we really liked). We also found the rules for combat refreshing, simple and straight to the point. An accumulative "push and shove" combat modifier was great and is ideal for the heavy infantry types. Furthermore the way the game dealt with characters fighting within units was innovative. All too often this can be a pain to resolve and a simple D6 roll for kill allocation seemed very sensible. Overall it was a really enjoyable and exiting game to play, which delivered a great war-gaming experience over approximately 4 hours. Having admired Rob's contribution to our hobby over years, I just know the finished product will be first class and will appeal to both friendly and tournament style gamers alike. Obviously I am saying that all tournament gamers are unfriendly (before one of them sticks one on me of course). Raglan |

Sounds like an interesting game. I liked Rob's write up at the Scarab site. I guess I'll be shelling out for yet another ancients rules set. ;-) |
