Just looking through teh lists for 2 armies I have, I have 2 queries:

1. WAC lists say Equites Illyricani are horse archers, as far as I know they were javelin armed

2. Byzantine Kavallarioi are javelin armed – as far as I know they were predominantly bow armed, could use javelin

Unless there has been a revision of these troop types since I last looked at the sources?

Also, they say all Sassanid Clibanarii are barded horses, I thought many less noble ones were 1/2 barded or even unbarded

Both observations 1 and 2 follow what I have read.

The Illyricani, generic term for Light cavalry units, were created from the javelin armed Promoti and Mauri. Reading the Notitia Dignitatum, bow armed units are recognized as "sagittarii".

The Kavallarioi may have initially been javelin or lance armed, but practice found them useful as bow armed troops.

I am not acquainted with the rule set, but do have the armies. My understanding, the change in Sassanid barding was gradual and in response to the greater threat throughout the centuries; marauding Arab bandits, Late Roman, Hephthalite Huns or the Byzantines.

You may want to post your query to the War and Conquest Yahoo Group. link

Cheers,

Yes, I have both armies from my WRG/DBM days too, I was just wondering if there had been some revisionist history I hadn't caught up on

Thanks for the comments (and the yahoo post), there is a version two of the list and that certainly has half barding for the clib.

Many lists are community generated and they are all free, and as the introductions say, we also welcome feedback and observations, with over 500 army lists (and counting) we won't get them all right, first or even second time out.

I will make a review of the comments and implement as needed, I have a number of list upgrades waiting in the wings.

kind regards

I joined the group, looks like Rob got here first :-)

I'll put some thought towards the 2 stat lines…I do have a vested interest, as all my Equites Illyricani have javelins and all my Kavallarioi have bows

..and half my Sassanids are unbarded :-D
