I know it would be an added complexity but I think it a pity you aren't allowed to dismount from chariots or horses at will, & even remount to fight on as cavalry etc.

It is one of those peculiarities …

I think much of the reserve with the Black Prince at Poitiers is drawn up on foot, then remounts to deliver the decisive charge in the final phase of the battle.

Rules said to cover periods of military history really have to embrace the tactics use in the great battles of those periods. So FoG should allow English Men-at-Arms to be fielded on foot then mount up during the course of battle.

That said, WRG rules that did allow mounting/remounting got abused by tournament play, I think – so that's why FoG is more restrictive (as is Armati, for example) … so maybe this sort of in battle flexibility needs to be reflected in special rules for historical play/scenarios rather than in the general rules.

It also avoids the need to have horseholders to show which troops may re-mount.

Thanks for the replies.

If I was to introduce a House Rule, what penalties would be needed for the procedure IYO?

I appreciate the need for Horse (or Chariot) holders but I'd be happy to simply use a marker until or if I decided to create the necessary vignette.
