Hi guys,

Pardon my foray into the Fantasy board but I've got a question for the experts among you. :)

I finally caved in and bought some of GW's Lord of the Rings figs and I'm already planning some mass-combat with them. I enjoy the heck out of DBx gaming and want to base my figs similarly, but before I do so I'm curious to know if anyone has done either HotT or Chipco's FR (LotR or otherwise) in 28mm? I'd hate to have to play with myself.

Wait that didn't come out right.

There is a FR! yahoo group...

I don't know if a poll has been done on the FR! Yahoo group recently, but as of a few years ago, at LEAST half of the players on the list gamed in 25mm scale.

The LoTR figures are responsible for me going over to the "Dark Side" for the first time as well. But, I think a good Dark Age set of rules will actually recreate Tolkein-esque warfare the best. I'm going to try "Comitatus" - which in its most recent edition can be downloaded for free from the LateRomanEmpire Yahoo group. Excellent rules, and enough variation to model all sorts of armies. If anyone is curious I can summarize what troop type conversions I'm considering, etc.

CATenWolde: Does "Comitatus" have rules for the fantastic beasts involved in a LotR battle?

CATenWolde10 Dec 2002 4:33 p.m. PST

It has rules for elephant units, which would take care of the Mumakai nicely. If you're thinking of warg-riders and such, I think they could be adapted from cavalry units. The only other beasts I can think of off-hand are the Fell Beasts of the Nazgul - but they are leaders not units - and the Ents - which really aren't "battle" units. Comitatus is an army level game, not a skirmish game, so things are scaled a bit differently.

DBM list denizen Luke Ueda-Sarson has DBM lists for all the major LotR factions on his site, and I just may try them out (or use an appropriate DBA army) before I take the plunge into a new rules set.

The Hott Yahoo group has an open Poll on the figure size players are using primarily, as well as closed poll on every figure size that players have used for HotT.

Luke Ueda-Sarson has also created HotT lists for LotR,
which you may be able to access from the DBM lists that Other Dave mentioned. If not, there are links to them from Alan Saunders' Stronghold HotT website.

I thought the evil empires LotR stuff was in 25mm and not 28mm!?!?! (just after everyone went over to 28mm ofcourse)

Autarch11 Dec 2002 9:50 a.m. PST

it is 25mm

Dave Kuijt's DBA middle earth adaptation work well too.
