Reviving National Events for DBA.

Here is my initial proposal for reviving national events for DBA.

National Championship
Decided by a National Invitational Tournament (NICT).

By invitation based on:
Tournament Results:
4 Players = Winner
8 Players = Winner; 2nd place
12+ Players = Winner; 2nd place; 3rd place
(Tournament results must be reported to me by director with name and contact information for invitees.)

Prior winners of NICT.

Czar invitation (generally for foreign visitors etc.).

Tournament played at Historicon with invitation year running for Historicon to Historicon. Played using latest version of DBA rules plus FAQ.

National DBA Cup
Decided by overall tournament performance for a tournament season (Historicon to Historicon).

Points Awarded:
Winner of tournament gets points equal to participants.
2nd place gets points equal to half the number of participants.
Participating in a tournament but not finishing 1st or 2nd = 1 point.
Being on winning team in a Big Battle game or historical battle = 3 points.
Being on losing team in a Big Battle game or historical battle = 1 point.
(Tournament/battle results must be reported to me by director with name and contact information for all players.)

Cup awarded at Historicon but you need not be present to win since the whole idea is to offer a yearly award that you can win without having to haul yourself to Historicon. It's also aimed at increasing participation in DBA events around the country.

Regional/Club House Cup
Awarded to most active Region (HMG) or Club based on games run and participants.

Points Awarded:
Number of players in a tournament run by your Region or Club.
Number of players in a Big Battle game/tournament run by your Region or Club.
Number of new players at a "newbie" event run by Region/Club.
Having a Regional Duke who actually reports to me = 5 points.
Publicizing your events = variable. (So if you do a nice announcement for your event on the Miniature Page and then follow up with pictures and recap, you'll probably see me post a "10 points for HMGX!" message.)

All of above just a proposal. Feedback welcome.

Sounds great. Could the regional events opt to use 2.2+? That is still the preferred version here in Texas…

If people do not want to use DBA 3 for Tom's suggestion, then just opt out. Why can't each version of DBA or spin offs just have their own competitions. Could people opt for DBA 1 or DBA 2 or 2.2?

Ivan DBA19 Aug 2016 7:19 p.m. PST

Well, because it would be nice to make it a national event.

I think regionally players should play whatever version they prefer. It is all about personal preference and choice.

If we are going to have a national level, I think that in order to participate, there has to a standardization of rules. Just like the NHL and NFL have a standard set of rules for hockey and football, a national DBA league needs a standard set of rules. In that way the version of rules is not a variable, but the skill and participation of the players is.

I do not think it a good idea to have at national level DBA 3, 2.2+, 2.2, 1.0, etc all allowed. There has to be one rules standard.

Dio, well put. Having a National DBA 3 Cup, would not preclude anyone from organizing Cup play for some other rules, do you think. Different Cups for Different Folks,

The idea is to have a national (and maybe international) event and not a regional event so we are trying to get a standard rule set across the country (which ideally would be the same as the standard international set).

I don't want to get into the situation that happened to my son – after years of trying he qualified for the NICT only to find it was being played using regional house rules about which he knew nothing.

Its only reasonable that the national championship of a particular rule set would be played actually using that rule set. For instance we are not going to play the NICT using my Game of Fire and Ice – because, while it has lots of DBX mechanics, its not an official rule set. (But come Saturday night to Battle for the Iron Throne using Fire & Ice – lots of mead and head rolling.)

The other issue is rule support. There is an international committe that issues FAQ and answers question re DBA 3.0 so we can have a common set of interps, it would be impossible to try and support every home brewed version.

Its also very helpful to newcomers to have a consistent set of rules and not have to master minor nuances to play in different regional events. As one of my goals is to increase the player base, this is a very important factor.

So grab a copy of the rules, put on an event, send me the results and your on your way to the DBA Cup and Top Region/Club Cup. (Though according to me sitting on the Iron Throne is far more prestigious.)

Indeed. I've been reading through my old Slingshots and I came upon a letter written by Phil Barker saying pretty much the same thing. "Members of the Society of Ancients may feel that a competition run on its behalf that is advertised as using a certain rule set is contractually obliged to use them as published." (Slingshot #199 Sept 1998 p58). Sort of explains his later attitude IMO.

TomT, we are playing DBA 3.0 in New Jersey, so we would participate in events at convention. I attend Cold Wars and Fall In, but not Historicon. many of us also play ADLG and DBMM in tournaments, so availability may be an issue, but we are interested.

Drusilla:

Just appoint yourself Duke of New Jersey and start reporting events.

House Jersey sounds fine. Pick your colors and Hearaldic banner and start reporting.
