I finally faced the challenge of all the lacing and have painted some 12th/13th century Samurai in 15mm.

I hope you like them.

One of my top pre-gunpowder periods and geographies for sure! Much more interesting than the post Shogunate period in my opinion. The wars of the first Shogunate are very fascinating. The abrupt change from the proxy rule by the Taira clan to the Minamoto clan was quite tumultuous. One of the first historical fictions I read about Samurai was during this period about Yoshitsune.

I think Old Glory makes some figures for this period too? Back in the day, I had to settle for Dixon/Two Dragons to proxy these as I didn't care for other manufacturer's Early Samurai figures. Lots to choose from now though!

Thanks, chaps.

Old Glory 15s are for the 16th century. Nice figures though – I'm about half way through an army of them too.

Amazing figures and a fabulous, well-researched article on the subject. Great to see hata-jirushi banners bearing the mon of the Hojo (dragon scales), Shōni (4 lozenge) , Kikuchi (2 feathers) and Takezaki (3 lozenge and kanji).

Most can be seen here for a little more inspiration!:

I really like the boxy profile of the older period Samurai armour. These look great, would love to see the whole lot ranked up together.

I'll see what I can do. It needs a lot of space :)

Carlos13th05 Jan 2014 8:32 a.m. PST

I imagine so. I am trying to paint a decent size force in 28mm so I have no idea how much space I am going to need when done.

Skeptic05 Jan 2014 9:20 a.m. PST

I see that Black hat also have a small range of Early Samurai.

Swampster05 Jan 2014 11:13 a.m. PST

I meant to include that afaik Black Hat, Tin Soldier, Irregular, Naismith and Minifigs also do 12th/13th century Samurai in 15mm.
