I received my playtester's copy of DB in the mail today.

I haven't read through the rules to see how different things are between the playtest and the final version, but the first impression is: it's an Osprey.

There are several full page plates, many colour photos of painted miniatures, and line drawings to illustrate the rules.

You can read more about the rules at the author's blog:

If you like what you read and especially if you already own a Dark Age army or two, you can easily use your figures for a game of DB since basing is flexible and distances are measured in base widths.

Approximately how many figures would one use for an average army in this game?

Pedrobear03 Aug 2012 7:06 a.m. PST

Let's see…

Under the sample army section, a Late period Saxon Army is given as:

1 Shieldwall Companion
5 Ordinary Shieldwall
2 Irish Warriors Allies
2 Foot Skimrishers

If you are using 15mm, DBX basing, this translates to:

6 x Sp = 24 figures
2 x Wb = 6 figures
2 x Ps = 4 figures

total = 34 figures, or about a DBA army.

If you go 4 bases to a unit, then it becomes 136 figures, which is I believe fewer than a DBM/DBMM/FOG army?

In 25mm/28mm the recommendation is to use a 6cm frontage, so if you are using WAB basing you are looking at fewer than 60 figures?

If using Impetus just use 1 Impetus base per unit.

They look interesting and also I don't think it would be that hard to use later Dark Age Armies with them. Just might have to pick up a set.

Me too.
