Talisman and I played our first game of DB last night. It was quite fun,and felt well balanced-the casualties were neck and neck.We really liked the use of the Leadership Points, and we were able to use it to our playing style.
I used an almost all Warrior Saxon army, and used my LP's aggressively to basically act as a sledge hammer.Talisman used his more defensively to shore up his shield wall while he swept his Riders around to catch my Warriors in the flank. It worked, but his shieldwall crumbled at the same time.We are definately going to play this one again. In fact,we are talking about a Dark Age style Fantasy game, with very, very low magic and limited troop types.

Glad to hear you had a fun game, sounds like you have got it spot on. A bit of magic for 'extra' atmosphere; especially considering most magic was 'smoke and mirrors' stuff with a large pinch of superstitious fear thrown in to the mix. It's the way I plan to go… including the Wendol (Eaters of the Flesh)from the 13th Warrior Film. Should spice up my vikings games.

Sadly here in the Southern USA, there is little interest. I still have several copies on the store shelf. I will put at least one of them on ebay and see if I can get my money back.

We've had some great games with them.

They've revitalised the interest in "ancients" and we've had some good games with Greeks vs Persians, the rules are easily adapted to earlier armies than Dark Age.

Personally I think they're the best rules to come out in ages!

I've had a couple of good games with them; they look like they will play 'out of period' as wel as for Dark Age Britain.

Rudy, that is a shame. Up here in central Indiana we have been playing them a lot. We are in the middle of a Winter King Arthur campaign at the moment with 8 players. DB has a a lot of subtle depth to it and is a great time to play.

Rudy how much you want for a copy?

I had my first game last night with my 11 year old son- beastmen vs Rohan! Worked well and he's keen for another game tonight

I think the rules have a lot of potential

For the use of magic we had talked about a limited effect, maybe a pre-battle altering of the terrain or environment(the bat swarms dim the sunlight so the orcs fight a little better kind of thing) and after that they could simply act in the monk/shaman role. That in itself adds a pretty good effect.

So far as large creatures,we thought they could simply fight at the higher classes of a category(noble versus ordinary),while cataphract would be reserved for Balrogs or giants.Eagles would be light mounted, but I thought about allowing them to pass over enemy troops to do their shooting attacks(dropping rocks)but not allowing any contact while doing so.Orcs would have mandatory Levys. I dont want to fiddle too much with the system, because I like it as is.

Btw,I apologise to Dan M. if we are turning your rules into something you never intended.:)

I would be interested in what you come up with for magic. I am running magi free games the my son.

It is such a straight forward system to add extra tweaks too.

I ran my son's minotaurs (beastmen) as cataphracts and wargs as wardogs but think I'll reduce the bravery of the wargs and may even use the beastmen as noble riders but with an additional +1 die when charging.

It is such an elegant little system it deserves to be used for all sorts of stuff.

from memory De Bellus fantasticus (DBF) related to DBA and DBM had some simple magic rules, may be worth a look for some idea, if you can find a free online copy.

Not a bad idea, but I dont have to find one,I have a copy:)I must be one of the few who bought it.

JPKelly25 Mar 2013 10:25 p.m. PST

How big are the battles? How many stands per side?
