What size bases/sabot bases are you using for your DB units? I am going to be making sabot bases so that my SAGA figures can be used for some DB games. My figs. are 28mm, and the inf. are mounted on 1" dia. fender washers and the cav. are on 25mm x 50mm bases. I can't get 3 cav. on the recommended 60mm wide bases w/o remounting them, and I really don't want to do that (I have 32 mounted Norman cav. mounted on 25mm x 50mm bases so far). I'm kind of thinking about using 90mm wide bases, because I can get 6 inf. on a base that size (in two ranks of 3) & 3 cav. will also fit on bases that size as well w/o remounting them. I will be supplying all the figs. for all of the armies that I'll be fielding for my DB games. Thanks for any input/ideas.
Regards,
Clay

We are using 120mm wide bases. 1 rank of skirmishers and cavalry, 2 ranks of heavy foot, Works a dream and looks great

Clay I too have made up bases for my SAGA figures. 90mm wide – 6 shieldwall, 5 warriors, 3 skirmishers. cavalry on 3 for nobles/riders and 2 for light horse. Had them laser cut from MDF so that the 25mm round bases (ovals for cavalry) fit perfectly. Regards Alan

I base on 1" fender washers same as you and am considering the Litko bases:

I have 3x2" bases for shieldwall and archers with 6 minis, fanatics with 4-5; 3x3" bases for warriors (6 minis), skirmishers (4), cavalry (2 sk, 3 Ordinary and 4 cataphracts and nobles).

That said I have been considering getting my old 4x2" sabots out for easier swaps to Saga, with 8 warriors to the base. the problem would be the 4x3" bases I'd want for he horse and I can't face flocking more bases.

I am using 15mm,and my figures are mounted singly on washers.I am using 40x40mm sabots. This is because I use my Dark Age stuff for fantasy, too and I play SoBH.

Mine are 15mm. In process of rebasing with 60mmX30mm bases. If using 28mm, I think the 120mm base mentioned above is a great idea. Leave plenty of depth for laying down status markers on the base.

About to embark on this in our club, with 28 mm figures. Agreed to use 100 mm x 50 mm bases. My figures are all on magnetic bases, 20 mm diameter for infantry and 50 mm x 25 mm for cavalry, so I have ordered steel movement trays- plan on putting 10 Shieldwall, 8 warrior, 4 cavalry and 2 mounted skirmishers on the bases. By using individually based figures reckon we can use for Saga and other rule sets as well as Dux Bellorum. Not so good for DBA or FoG , but we tend to use 15 mm for those anyway.

I'm also using 120mm frontage so I can use my minis for both Impetus and Dux Bellorum.

I'm aiming at 120mm by 60mm units, but actually using a pair of 60mm bases for each unit. As I have limited figures it does mean I have the option of using the 60mm frontage if I need to provide both sides.

I have become enamored with the diorama-style bases in Impetus armies. Would like to base 15mm figures on 60mm x 40mm bases for all troop types. I would also like to get the mini-bits dice frames in the US. Anyone know of a US retailer?

Thanks

Something that I have been mulling over is using an oval base for the units, rather than rectangular. I'm thinking of the potential for vignettes with such a base, plus it makes warrior/skirmish/cavalry units look a little more "rough" in their formation vice the normal wargames "all ranked up" image.

There are 120mm oval bases available in plastic (made by GW) through Horde O Bitz, and other bitz sellers.

In addition, there is a lovely 115mm oval from Renedra that I saw which apparently can be obtained in 4-packs for a very reasonable price.

Using an oval base might be a tad bit fiddly with DB rules, but to my mind, if both armies are based the same way, and you measure properly, then it ought not to be a great concern.

As I said, I'm still mulling over the idea. My ancients are all based for Impetus, but my Late Roman/Dark ages stuff is still unbased so would be easy to do with this oval base concept.
