I've given up on trying to create a Welsh force in 1/72-20mm for Saga.

…….& turned to a warband representing the forces of the late Roman commander,Arthur dux bellorum.

There are a number of sets that go a long way towards creating plausible units: particularly the Italeri Late Roman infantry & "Gothian" cavalry.

However, I have not found a plastic or metal figure, mounted, that would work as a "Warlord": essentially, Arthur himself.

Any recommendations will be gratefully considered.

Shame about the welsh force Project.
Maybe newline?

or, give the gothic cav (second row) a headswop from the late Roman inf set, and add a cloak?

Welsh are just impossible.

I'm wary of adding figures that don't suit the dynamic feel of the Italeri ones, so HaT & Newline aren't in the frame.

I like your second suggestion. Possibly replace the spear with a spatha (Excalibur?!?)

Tumbling dice now have a 1/72 range of goths and LIR, Pictures are hard to come by but here is a shot of some of the Gothic cavalry.

I think they would like fine for what you want to do.

Others in case you did not see them…

Medium Cavalry link Don't have these yet but i think they are a must if you want Arthur's "knights."

Germanic Warriors link I have these. They are a good and useful set.

LIR Infantry link These are by HaT. They paint up well.

LIR Missile troops link I don't have these but they look about the same as they melee types in terms of quality.

MiniArt Roman Infantry link Some of these figures are not so good. Others make great hero and command figures. They also paint well.

MiniArt Roman Cavalry link The review by PSR is less than glowing but I have seen the models painted and they look quite nice.

Firstly, thanks.
It's the strength of places like TMP that you have knowledgeable people to bounce ideas off.

As you SAGA people know, another possible troop type is levy.

The Late Romans (but Arthur?) would have Foederati to fill this niche.
Historically, they were Germanic.

Now finding lightly armed late Germans is hard too.
So how about these?

Obviously not the falx-men.

Yep, replace the spear but you could Keep the spear..he had one called Rhongomyniad (his first weapon) along with other swords, Clarent and Seure and the dagger Carnwennan.
