… and hear the lamentation of their women?

My Romano-British noble cavalry and shieldwall army has gone up twice against an Irish army of noble warriors. Both games were bloody and decisive, decided in favour of the Irish.

It has got me thinking, how do other people crush armies with high numbers of noble warriors (these would mostly be Irish or raiders I suppose)?

Any hints and tips most welcome.

Though I havent played as you know I would be tempted by getting Monks so you can use the extra command points to reduce hits when hit by the noble warriors against the shieldwalls and try and outflank with the cavalry

Gnu200009 Nov 2014 8:28 a.m. PST

Hold them with the shieldwall (using LPs for defence) and flank them with skirmishers and riders.

Warriors are also subject to uncontrolled charges so their battle line can get easily disrupted, giving a chance to isolate their companions.

Historically, you generally just had to wait a while and they would crush themselves for you.

The Irish will hit you…a lot. Make sure you save plenty of LPs to absorb their hits. Like Gnu2000 says, hold them with the shieldwall and flank them. Fix and flank. As they only have a 5 defense, there will be times when your shieldwall will actually score hits without help. Your 6 defense will mean that their attacks will likely not be decisive, even with a lot of attacks coming in.

Have you considered hiring some mercs? I hear there are a couple of Saxon boys who have a crackerjack merc company. Their names are Hengist and Horsa… Something like that anyway. Vortigern hired them to solve his Pict problem and he got good results. So why not give it some thought?

Six points will yield a nice company…

Deploy very wide, with gaps between your units to widen your line. Make him fight you two to one. With LPs to cancel hits, and with fewer units engaged, you should be able to cancel most hits. Use your extra units to hit him in the flanks.

Thanks lads. In the last game there the Irish were actually defending and sitting on a hill. I tried to lure him down with some archers. His dogs ate them. I tried to bolster my line with priests. His dogs ate them too. His leadership rolls were good enough to mean that he never once did an uncontrolled charge. And when he did charge…. his warriors ate me (by that stage the dogs had got their comeuppance).

I will try deploying wide I think. That just may work.

TGunner – already hired those chaps, but I asked them t fight in a shieldwall and they now make up the backbone of my infantry…

Are you getting an agent's fee, Tgunner?

Tgunner09 Nov 2014 6:33 p.m. PST

Nah, just trying to get them to move along… They keep pestering me for more land, they whine about the beer, they put vinegar on their fries, they play football without tackling, and they harangue me for permission to bring over more of 'em.

Sorry boys, me defense budget just can't support more of these bleeding heathens. They need to find new digs somewhere else!

@hotspur- well there's your problem right there. Those Anglish are warriors, not proper soldiers. Let them get a few beers, sacrifice a few sheep or cats to their Woden.. Oden… Bolden or whatever, point them in the general direction of the enemy, and just let them have fun. That'll keep them scurvy Scoti dogs busy until your horse can flank 'em and send them running. That spacing out of the shield wall sounds good too.

Hosted two games of DB at my hotel during Fall In convention this past weekend. In the first game, the Irish got slaughtered by Romano-British with charges of riders (mix of noble and ordinary) on the flanks while the shieldwall slowly ground the warriors down. In the 2nd game, the Irish managed to punch thru the shieldwall before their flanks completely crumbled. Love how Dux Bellorum plays, my friends had never played but after the games they bought the rules at the convention the next day.

Joker: We need to get together for another game of Dux Bellorum some time. I'd like to get my 10mm armies on the table again!

Look great. manufacturer??

Romano-Brits are mostly Pendraken Late Romans, with some Norse filling out the Saxon shieldwalls.

Pendraken Welsh fleshing out the Irish – but most are from Magister Militum.

Prince Albert: Got pics of the finished armies? I could not make Fall-In. Just too much to do! Yes. Some battling would be fabulous.

Very nice. That wash you use really brings the details out in the figures. Is there a special recipe you use?

Cheers,
Aaron

I just use GW washes. Vallejo normally, but love the dark GW inks.

Just realise we've been doing uncontrolled charges all wrong… This might be a game changer!
