I'm now completely confused. Mersey's Dux is meant for Arthurian (as his army lists show), while Lion is for the period beginning in 1100 AD. Which to use for the period 800 to 1099 AD? Has he, or anyone else, posted thoughts on this? |

There's a thread over on BGG with suggested Viking, Saxon and Norman retinues for Lion Rampant: link There's also some thoughts there on using Dux Bellorum for 1066: link Dan Mersey seems to be happy to see both used for the Viking Age. I own both games and have played Dux Bellorum but only read Lion Rampant. Based on this experience, I think that both games will cover the period nicely, but each will do it differently. The games themselves are not really comparable, because they try to do different things. |

Lion Rampant losses a great deal when you move away from the boasts – so they'd need revisiting. |

if you are looking for a characterful Viking game with a good campaign attached to it, check out Age of Blood from freewargames.co.uk you will need to get version 1 as well for the fate cards reference sheet (got left out) it is a little more skirmish-ey than LR, and i don't have DB. I think you would be fine with LR, just use the troop types presented and leave out the mounted men at arms and such. |

Saga is surely the obvious choice? |
