Shortly, I'm going to base a small Roman army for Impetus, just for fun. IIRC the bases for legionaries are 12cm by 4cm, with a dozen miniatures on them. Do you reckon I should use a single base to represent a cohort, or 2? And should the Auxiliaries be on a deeper base? Thanks, Simon |

Two ranks of six figures. If Auxiliaries are FL then yes. If you reckon they are best portrayed as FP then the same as Legionarii. |

Simon a base for each cohort, oh yes. You might try 10 per base. Your base work is so good any way, it's a great little game! |

10 or 12 depending upon the mini size. Except for skirmish types, I don't go by what the rules suggest. I pick the base size that looks best and go from there. MOST of my legionary are on 60mm deep bases. That gives me room in front and back for scenery, embellishments, etc. I USUALLY, but not always, base cavalry on the same depth base, but use more or less depending upon type. For example, horse archers go 3 to a base, spread out. Medium go 4 to a base, and cataphracts would be 5 to a base, somewhat staggered to give a sense of motion. When I get around to doing a Steppes or Hunnish army, I'm probably going to be using massed cavalry on deeper stands (80mm-100mm deep) so as to give the look of mass/mob to the cavalry that I envision them to be. Just food for thought. |

I base SK on the 40 x 120 T archers on 60 x 120 It then depends upon the army, my middle imperials are three ranks deep on an 120 x 60 base. My late Romans are between 11 and 14 infantry on the base, light cav 3 to a base, med 4 or 5, heavy 5 or 6. Arty 1 or two pieces. cheers Matt |

So clearly, there is some room for discretion! I'll see what looks right. Thanks chaps, Simon |

Are your EIR Aventine? If so 12 figures will fill up the base nicely. Foundry or Warlord probably could do with 14 figures per base. I find too many Impetus players skimp on their basing. It may get them a few more bases but it doesn't always look great. Having seen your pics I know that skimpy isn't your style. For comparison purposes I offer you my groups basing conventions: FP = 12 to 16 figures. My FP bases are 5cm deep to give a bit more room for protecting the figures. Almost never effects game play. The other guys in the group go with 4 cm. The 6cm base depth option is to accomodate LHI stands from WRG/DBM. T and FL = 10 figures CP = 6-8 figures CM = 6 figures CL and S = 4 figures |

No MB, these ones are Foundry Perry, on the smaller end of the scale, too small for my other toys, so ideal for trying out a different approach. A bus man's holiday! I'm thinking I'll put around a dozen legionaries and a casualty or two on each base, and perhaps some terrain features; in fact, inspiration is striking
Cheers, Simon |

BigRedBat; Impetus and you should be a great match, especially the way you already base your troop. When finished your stuff should be nothing short of spectacular! |

I placed 14 Aventine heavy infantry figures on one Impetus-sized base.
link For Renegade foot I could have squeezed 14 figures on the base but with their unwieldly throwing positions, I opted for a little more spacing and chose 12 figures. |

Has anyone made bases like this with cav 2 deep? Have pics? |

A zombie thread! I have now based much of the army that I mentioned in the original post. I think that cavalry based 2 deep wouldn't work, but you can get the effect from 2 elements based 1 deep, and other bits from the army. I painted some of the minis, the better painted ones are by Dave Imrie.
Best, Simon |

Thanks chaps; I just need a couple of weeks of free time to round the army off, hopefully in the Autumn! |
