I've been planning to rebase at least two matched pairs of armies to try out Basic Impetus. Most of my models are 1/72 plastic and are based two to a 40mm x 20mm base and were used for Warmaster Ancients. Does anyone have a gallery of similar models I can peruse for inspiration? At the moment, I plan to rebase an EIRoman army with and an Ancient British army-- both mainly made from figs from ESCI and Italeri. I'd like to see how others based and arranged their figures.

to be honest, as long as your armies are on similar and consistent bases, there is no need to rebase them – simply use them on 40x20 bases, use two bases together as an element, and try out the rules

There is a Gallery on the Impetus site at dadiepiombo.com/bigalle.html should give you some inspiration.

I just did exactly this, although using Hat Dacians and EIR. I put 12 legionaires on 120x40mm (2 ranks of 6) and used about 10 Dacians figs in loose order on 120x60mm for the warbands. The nice thing about the big base size is that you can be creative with dioramic basing and they just plain feel right to play with- I never liked mucking about with the hordes of 20x40s. I also agonized over rebasing but no regrets (yet anyway!)

BTW- two thumbs up for Basic Impetus. It has surprising tactical depth for a simple game.

widthe is important, and depth is not. 120mm wide is correct for 25mm+ sized figures making something like 12 figures per base if you have 6 stands and 2 men per stand on a base. No rebasing required. Just sabot them to the larger base.

depth is important for armies that require line replacement as it can make the difference between advancing your troops in 1 move or two.

I started on Basic Impetus, if you like the system I would very highly recommend the full rules – even more tactical depth!

Agreed, Basic Impetus rocks ! My son and his school friends play BI during lunch breaks with paper counters.

Just placed an order with LITCO for bases to convert my last 3 armies to Impetus (Indian, Gallic, and Macedonian). Son and I really like Basic Impetus rules, still absorbing the full rules.

Yah, I am still figuring every thing out with regular Impetus. Nice system!

Thanks,

John

I use 6 cavalry or 12 infantry on the larger bases, 2 deep 10men plus standard/music and officer. and 4 skirmishers. This saves me timeonpainting and money on figures. I have the officers detachable and they stand infront if the unit is prepared and behind if disordered, viva plastic.

I use 20x20mm figures for my HaT Macedonian phalanxs. You can see some photos here: link

Hey Waco Joe, what do you base your cav on?

Waco Joe05 Mar 2009 6:53 p.m. PST

Those are 25x50mm. Essentially I was basing for WAB 25mm scale. Light infantry were on 25x25mm bases, which I understand is now out of vogue, and the skirmishers were on 20mm rounds.

hwarang06 Mar 2009 5:33 a.m. PST

it states in the rules that you can also use 8cm frontage (15mm frontage) for 1/72, which is what i did. it gives DBAesque bases, with the option for a few figures more and with space on the base to put a few scenic items on.

you could either
a) just use your bases as they are. it works.
or
b) put two bases (or three bases, if you want 12cm front) abreast. you could add other bases in reart ranks for additional depth – if you want to. i would probably not do that.

i also second the idea of trying the "full" Impetus rules. they really do not add that much in terms of rule volume. but they add rules that give an even better feeling to certain units, like impetuous troops and light troops,

So gentlemen "What armies do you use for Basic Impetus ?" Especially are there any one box of plastic figures armies ?
I hope to purchase some 1:72 plastics tomorrow and all information will be really useful :)

Thanks in advance !

Piotr

A single box BI army?

Perhaps one of the Hat "army" boxes which include both mounted and foot troops. They do Assyrians, Macedonians, Persians, Goths, Theban and are coming out with Spartans and Etruscans. Otherwise you will likely need two boxes at least for most to get mounted and foot.

Check here hat.com/current.html for box contents since they are mostly not listed on PSR (as they are composites of the contents of other boxes).

With you suggestions, I'll be retaining the original basing for a while and blue tack them on the bigger bases first. Thanks for the suggestions and the links:)

one box armies:
vikings
anglo-saxons
maya
inca
spartans
