Can anyone point me to a source for 8cm and 12cm bases?

I use Tiny Tin Troops for my Impetus bases

I don't think he has them on his site, but drop him an email and he'll be able to help

oh I get them made from magnetised 3.5mm mdf

his email address is main@tinytintroops.co.uk

thanks!

Seriously? You want to *buy* them?

Wargames Accessories makes 40mm x 80mm, but that's the largest, I think:

Get on over to the Home Depot or Lowe's. Get the cheapest 12" linoleum/vinyl floor tiles they have: should be 50 or 60 cents each. Lay out the bases on the surface with a ruler and fine tip Sharpie. Score with a utility knife and snap them. Clean up the edges with a sanding block. Pennies apiece per base.

Thanks Allen, I like your Lowes idea.

Don't the vinyl/linoleum tiles warp? Are they firm enough to handle 28mm metal figs without the basing materials cracking?

I've thought of using them for… something before, when I've seen them at Lowe's, but always thought they'd be too flexible.

If I'm wrong, you're my new hero.

"Don't the vinyl/linoleum tiles warp? Are they firm enough to handle 28mm metal figs without the basing materials cracking?"

The ones I get are pretty stiff, and haven't warped on me yet, in… seven or eight years? I use simple, standard basing techniques: carpenter's wood glue and sand, washed and highlighted. So the basing material is in a slightly flexible matrix, too.

You can also use the tile material as movement trays for steel-based figures: just laminate a piece of magnetic sheet to the top. I use original Gorilla Glue very sparingly and spread thin, clamp it, and clean up around the edges before it sets.

If you have figures based on steel fender washers or other steel rounds, you can get the appropriate size scrapbooker's punch from the craft store, punch out rounds of magnetic material, glue them down to the tile, and fill around them with basing material. If you have individual figures on square or rectangular steel bases, but don't want to fill up the tray, cut square or rectangular pieces of magnetic sheet to match the figure bases, and stick them down.

Both those ideas work well not only for basing troops for Impetus if they're already on single bases (and you want to be able to go either way), but also for "War of the Ring" style basing--or just moving lots of individually-based figures around for any system.

I love dem tiles… ;^)

Shogun Miniatures have steel bases for Impetus:
shogunminiatures.com

I ordered the flanged bases and plan to use units based for other rules with magnetic bottoms.

SOLD! On my way to Lowe's this weekend. Thanks for the tip.

Vinyl tiles work well for impetus 28mm bases in my experience. They're even self adhesive which aids attaching sand etc.

aecurtis, I like your style! I love the "forget paying, I'll build it myself" mentality! Great ideas, by the way…

BTW… another GREAT way to base minis individually or for small groups is with ceramic floor tiles. You can get a sheet of 144 3/4" or 1" tiles for about $4 USD a sheet. these match up with 20mm & 25mm respectively. What's nice is that they are heavyish, are about 1/4" thick, take paint and cements well and are VERY resilient to any sort of damage.

You can also get 2" and 3" square tiles in sheets, and all sorts of round, hex, and rectangular sets as well.

While you are at Lowes or Home Depot, you might take a few minutes and check out the ceramic tile section. grin

I just cut a bunch outta card stock used to back comic books with.

Okay… I just went to Lowe's, got some linoleum tiles per Allen, and….

LOVE IT. I'm not cutting everything with laser-like precision (I make some mistakes), but the cuts are within 1mm each way, which I can live with. I spent $1.72 USD for two tiles, and have now cut enough bases for two stands of Arachosian light cavalry, two stands of skirmishing Cretan archers, and six stands of close-order hoplites. I have about 75% of my two tiles yet to cut. Absolutely splendid.

I may have erred in purchasing the tiles that are about 1/8" thick, instead of the really thin ones (the thin ones usually come with a sticky backing, which I didn't want), but I like the "pedestal" look of a nice, thick base. And no warping.

Splendid. I have a blog I haven't touched in months, and I'll post some photos when I get a chance.

For those who really want wooden bases, just buy a sheet of 2mm or 3mm MDF at the hardware store – I bought mine at the local Kent Store. I believe it's about $5.00 USD or less for a 2x4 ft sheet.

Measure and score with a fine craft knife. Finish the cut with a heavy duty craft knife. Clean up with a sanding block. I made all of my bases in around a half an hour. So far I've based a 15mm Impetus army and a 28mm Fantasy army. I've still got left overs.

I should mention, I measure as precisely as I can and then use a carpenter's square (which has a long steel ruler as one side)to guild my cuts.

I must say, the floor tile idea really piques my interest. Any photos anywhere of models mounted on them?
