Given that there now is a version of "Basic Impetus" that includes evades:

Which game would YOU prefer to play? And why?

Basic Impetus. Easy and approachable. I thought Impetus was not very well thought out and went too far in some places.

I prefer a more interactive turn sequence, but like the approachability of BI. This version with evades and more movement might be a happy medium. Though I doubt it'll supplant Sword & Spear as my go to rules.

Basic – It has 99% of the rules I would want for free…

Dynaman8789,

What would be the missing 1% that you would want?

I prefer Impetus. It offers players a greater variety of outcomes making each game guite distinct even when the same armies are used.

Jeff – the lists from the main book mostly.

There were some other rules in the main book that I remember, kinda, sorta, that were nice as well. I have not played the full version in many years though.

Have to put in a plug for the main rules. Is fairly simple, and I enjoy the different books and campaign ideas.

Basic Impetus + an evade phase … and a simple rule that says if troops interpenetrate only one of them may shoot. Job done thumbs up!

The new version of Bssic Impetus solves the "evasion" black hole that existed but it adds in multiple phase movement which just complicates matters and is, in my opinion, best forgotten about. The other remaining problem is that while base sizes go from 80mm for 15mm to 120mm for 25/28mm figures the value of U doubles(?) This makes for two entirely different games where if you are using 25/28mm figures your troops move further, turn faster and shoot further than if you are using 15mm figures. The answer, of course, is to make U 15mm in 25/28mm scale, which is what we've done in our campaign, using a card movement stick with the various troop types movement rates marked on it.
