Thanks for the news!

Got my copy. Seems to be two copies of the rules/lists?

kodiakblair12 Dec 2016 10:19 a.m. PST

Been checking for this over the weekend.

Downloading it now.

Basic Impetus used to be a free intro to the full rules (which I bought a couple of years ago). How is the new version so different that it is now charged for?

See description on Wargame Vault.

Basic Impetus was a "lite" version of Impetus. I think they realized many people were just playing BI and not graduating to Impetus. So they polished up BI and updated the army lists.

I have only glanced at the new rules but they have evasion rules, which was not true for the first edition. Makes a big difference if you run a horse archer army. :^)

Are you whining about horse archers again? evil grin

Yeah. This is a more polished version of BI. New stuff and modifications etc.

Just read thru the PDf. Even have rules for large games with multiple commands. So what is the argument for buying the full version of Impetus now?

It is tonight's whine selection, an oldie but a goodie. Would you prefer a table with a better view? Sorry, that's reserved for Jay-Zee and Beyonce.

So what is the argument for buying the full version of Impetus now?

For those who like greater granularity / increased complexity?

vtsaogames12 Dec 2016 12:49 p.m. PST

On the two versions: one is 'printer-friendly'.

Evasion test: the modifiers seem to indicate that you want a high number to pass the test but then it says a 1 always fails.

coopman12 Dec 2016 5:54 p.m. PST

Thanks. I bought it too. It's purty!

Tarty2Ts12 Dec 2016 8:19 p.m. PST

These are a complete re-worked set of rules quiet different to the old 'free' download of Basic Impetus.

losart13 Dec 2016 9:21 a.m. PST

yes a totally different game from the older Basic Impetus.
A kind of bridge towards Impetus 2.

You modify the dice roll with the modifiers, not the number you need to score

1ngram18 Dec 2016 3:45 a.m. PST

You shouldn't need to dice for horse archers (or skirmishers) to evade. That was their job, after all

steamingdave47 At the price I can barely refer to it as charging. Well worth it in my opinion having purchased them. Now if only the later Achaemenids could take an Indian elephant I would be truly happy.

'Lots of people not upgrading BI to full set'? Yep! Guilty m' lud! That was me!

Mainly because I spent my gaming time on 2 other periods, but heck, I've bought lots of rules (including Ancients) to just sit patiently on my shelf awaiting my next period epiphany…

But with full Impetus I was put off by the numerous errata that had to be incorporated, and then there was the errata for the errata errors. Iirc some of the published errata mods contradicted other errata mods…..

It was WRG Barkerphobia all over again….. last experienced when I bought 7th ed. with "Fully Revised Edition" flashed across the corner on the cover, only to open it up to find yet another errata sheet inside. D'oh!

So let's see if all the Impetus amendments can be finalised for Full Impetus 2…..

Meanwhile, for 5 measly bucks do I get Basic Impetus 2 to keep me going until it's big brother arrives?
