I have had a set of these for a while and just getting around to sorting a couple of dark age armies. I have, however, one question. The Leadership and Training seems to be quite important in the rules but how do you set up a rating for the troops, I can't see anything in the rules, but then again maybe I just missed it.

is there a way of formulating L&T or is it based on the generic troop types at the back of the rules?

Thanks in advance

It may not be of interest if all you're doing are the "dsrk ages", but take a look at how they're applied across a wide range of armies in the Crusader Macedonian and Punic wars army lists.

Or elsewhere, but that would be immodest to mention (And I have had a good deal of coaching from Mark.)

Or you could ask Mark.

T&L is a judgement call. Check the sample units given for guidance. E.g. Saxon These being about a 5, Jomsvikings being around a 8.

The T&L of units is a representation of their ability to perform 'awkward' manoeuvres on the battlefield. As Hurcheon says it is decided on a case by case basis and isn't so much dependant on ‘good' or ‘bad' troops but how flexible you see them as being.

A Veteran Celt warband may only be T&L 5 whereas Levy or Trained legionaries could be T&L 7 or 8. I don't think there is a corresponding stat for FOG or DBX but I suppose the closest thing would be the Leadership value in WAB.

As Allen mentioned above there are a fair few lists – the most recent being his work in WSS magazine which handily has the stats for multiple systems so you can compare. There are also lists uploaded to the Crusader forum here

If there is anything to do with more specific forces or lists you can always pop over to the forum and I'm sure people more knowledgeable than me can help out.

Thanks guys, that is what I sort of thought, extrapolating the stats from the various standards in the back of the book.

Thanks again

Simon
